king ubu Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Those label-centered sets are true treasure troves! I LOVE the HRS set, and I love lots of what's on the Capitol box, too! I'd have loved a Continental set or other such label-centered releases (and of course I do not have the Commodore boxes). Quote
miles65 Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Since it arrived I played the Ellington set three times in a row. Even after knowing most of the music at least ten years it was like new. It won't be far from my CD player for a long time. Now it's Onzy Matthews Select disc 2. I realy like the big bands from that period. Quote
colinmce Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Bennie Green, Disc 1. 2 will be forthcoming. Quote
jeffcrom Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 The new Ellington set, disc 5. I'm finally starting to "get" "Reminiscing in Tempo." Some music takes years to reveal all of its secrets - to me, anyway. Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 The new Ellington big band set as well! Disk 7, "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm" and "Alabamy Home." This is Ellington, so much going on! Over repeated listens, it almost gets to be overwhelming...there is so much music in a three minute song!!! It's CRAZY. I always considered myself to be partial to the mid 50s-1960ish period in Ellingtonia...this set along with the small band Mosaic set is changing my mind---or at least forcing me to moderate my stance. I am so glad Mosaic restores such great music and puts in such a classy package! Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 I missed out on the Curtis Fuller set, I wish I could have gotten it, especially since it was "cheap" when it was in print! I am listening to Mosaic's HRS sessions, disk 1, Pee Wee Russell. He was quite the original, I also love him in the Oliver Nelson big band set! Quote
jeffcrom Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 My newly-arrived replacement copy of disc 6 from the new Ellington set. Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 Duke Ellington Reprise recordings. Disk 1, "Contrasts" Duke had a beautiful band during this era. Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 The Complete Capitol Small Group Recordings of Benny Goodman 1944-1955. Disk one. TRACK 1. After you've gone. SEVEN TIMES. Benny Goodman is a clarinet genius. Quote
king ubu Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 yowzah! I recently scored a copy of that Goodman set! now playing: discs 1-3 (Sessions A-C) of the Andrew Hill big sucker... it's been a while - and the music is still all as glorious as ever! Quote

I was totally taken aback at the true genius Benny Goodman was. Incredible musicianship. I do not have the big Andrew Hill.....on the list (if I can find a cheap price yeah right,,,,). BTW, I just received the Sam Rivers Blue Note set (got it for $29.99 ) it's in great shape, and the playing is wonderful. Looking forward to spending some time with it after the PACKERS with on Sunday Quote
tranemonk Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 I was listening to a couple CDs from the Sonny Stitt set in my car... Hadn't listened to that set in years..... I'm surprised this one is still in print.... Quote

Is it plain enjoyable, or more academic? I don't have very much of this type of music. Opinions? Quote
jeffcrom Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 Ellington, disc 8. This one is almost overwhelming - one masterpiece or near-masterpiece after another. Quote

I've not yet played much of it, but enjoyed the earliest stuff (and have some other Braxton from later periods, too). Now playing: Quote

colinmce Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 In brief: very enjoyable, only minorly "academic" as you say (not me). The For Two Pianos and For Four Orchestras material is the only outwardly 'difficult' stuff on the set, and maybe the solo material and For Trio to those entirely disinclined toward the avant garde. Other than that, it's impossible to imagine not enjoying the rest: the scintillating quartets with Kenny Wheeler and George Lewis, the wonderful duets with Muhal Richard Abrahms and especially the Creative Orchesta material are all sure to please. If it's exploring you're after then I can't imagine a better set. Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 (edited) Thank you ALL for your input and guidance re: Braxton . I will probably order that set in May when the MJQ set comes out to save on shipping. I am on a self-imposed Mosaic buying hiatus until then (we'll see how self-discipline goes...). I am listening to the Red Norvo recordings disk 12 of the Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions . The Buddy Rich and Woody Herman Columbia sets are coming in this week Edited January 24, 2011 by Jazz Nut Quote
king ubu Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Still deeply into Hill... have played several times the "Judgment" and "Point of Departure" sessions today, now going through the "Andrew" and "Pax" (or whatever again they called the first of the dates with Hubbard). Gilmore is deeply fascinating, darker than Henderson ever got and hence a more fitting companion for Hill, methinks... though Henderson on "Point..." is fascinating, too... lots of Trane in his playing there, as I hear it. And KD is a perfect match with his slightly bitter lyricism - complementing Dolphy's outward antics and Henderson's more restrained lyricism. Quote
king ubu Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 Played all the Hill up to the end of disc 6 last night, and followed with the Rivers date on disc 7 Quote
