ghost of miles Posted April 21, 2023 Report Posted April 21, 2023 Revisiting this one for the first time in quite awhile—really pleasing swing-to-bop music. Disc 3 with Flip, and Howard McGhee on board for some sides: Quote

Bluesnik Posted April 23, 2023 Report Posted April 23, 2023 Prompted by a mention here I unearthed this treasure I seldom listen to. What a joy. Quote
Clunky Posted April 30, 2023 Report Posted April 30, 2023 Charles Mingus - The Jazz workshop concerts 1964/5 Disc 6 the September’65 set which sounds a little ragged especially the opening number. Nice to have it nonetheless. Quote

Nice to have it nonetheless. I really need to dig that Mingus set out for an overdue relisten. No doubt though it would get ejected next week as the new JATP set and the Tristano should finally arrive in the mail on Tuesday. Barring Acts of God, earthquakes, PO strikes etc. Edited April 30, 2023 by sidewinder Quote
sidewinder Posted May 2, 2023 Report Posted May 2, 2023 Finally arrived - CD1 and will be working my way through the set this afternoon. Impressed with the clear sound. Quote

Stompin at the Savoy Posted May 5, 2023 Report Posted May 5, 2023 The sound quality on this is great. Some terrific, toe-tappin stuff. Quote
Larry Kart Posted May 5, 2023 Report Posted May 5, 2023 Of all the Mosaic sets I've bought, this one may have surprised me the most. LOTS of fine music here. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 7, 2023 Report Posted May 7, 2023 CD1 - The audio isn’t great but much of the music is wonderful. Quote
hanleda Posted May 8, 2023 Report Posted May 8, 2023 Ear Opening for me of the few Mosaics in my collection were the Django Reinhardt, the Pee Wee Rusell on the Louis Prima set, the initial Select Grachan Moncur with Jackie McLean, the first disc of the Duke Pearson Select, the Mercer Select and the Freddie Slack Select. All provided something different that really grabbed my ears. Quote
Stompin at the Savoy Posted May 12, 2023 Report Posted May 12, 2023 (edited) This arrived in the mail today and I am enjoying it now. ghost of miles Posted May 12, 2023 Report Posted May 12, 2023 (edited) Disc 8, which consists primarily of the Hawkins-Eldridge Jazz at the Opera House date. Edited May 12, 2023 by ghost of miles Quote
mikeweil Posted May 13, 2023 Report Posted May 13, 2023 Disc one from both of these, probably my favourites: Quote
Stompin at the Savoy Posted May 19, 2023 Report Posted May 19, 2023 (edited) Still slowly making my way through this. I was familiar with most of the musicians but had never heard these albums. A wealth of stuff with Ben Webster, Billy Strayhorn, Roy Eldridge, Clark Terry and others. I like Les Spann a lot - such a different style - and enjoyed his playing on this. He doesn't solo much but his comping is tasty. At times he plays a role somewhat like Basie in the ensemble. Also some previously unissued west coast sessions with Mel Lewis. Excellent sound throughout. Overall surprised, even a bit shocked how much I like this set! Some great music. Now I may have to pick up a few more Johnny Hodges records and re-listen to some I have.
