Fortunately I've seen both several times. Quote

Has to be close to 300 gigs a year. fwiw Tyshawn had three drums. Snare, small Tom, bass drum. Ride cymbal & one other cymbal. Devastatingly great. 55 minutes. Micah elevated the last 15 or so. Tyshawn giving lessons. Edited March 9 by Steve Reynolds Quote

ejp626 Posted March 10 Report Posted March 10 Last Thurs, Don Byron with Michael Occhipinti on guitar. The best song was Michael's composition "Go Fly a Kite," though they also did a Nirvana cover. I believe it was Lithium. That really got the crowd at the Rex going. I did manage to get to the Women from Space event with Myra Melford, Ingrid Laubrock and Lesley Mok last night. Sadly I did not enjoy this at all, as it seems like particularly pointless free jazz noodling that didn't cohere at all for me. I left after 40 minutes. I will have to stop going to free jazz shows, as I never enjoy them. Next week Gary Smulyan is at the Rex, backed by Neil Swainson and Terry Clarke (no piano or guitar in the mix). This should be interesting, and I'll make it over once or maybe twice. I don't think I've ever seen Smulyan live. Quote
T.D. Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 Tonight: Chris Jonas Deserts Quartet in Saugerties, NY. I know almost nothing about this group, but the event was recommended by a forum member and sr. tickets are only $12.50 😁 Quote
cliffpeterson Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 Saw the Chris Jonas Quartet in Troy NY last night. Great Show. Apparently he has videos to go along with the music that were not able to be shown in last night's location but will be shown in Saugerties. He is in Brooklyn in a couple days. Quote
T.D. Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 The Saugerties show was really good. The videos add a lot and are definitely worth seeing. The set with video runs longer than the Troy show (per cliff) did, because Chris speaks about them at some length. Quote
medjuck Posted March 15 Report Posted March 15 Just came back from seeing the Charles LLoyd Delta trio (Jason Moran piano and Marvin Sewell guitar) at the 600 seat Lobero Theater in his home town of Santa Barbara on the night before his 87th birthday. The nearly sold out audience was enthralled (as was I). When I saw him there on his birthday 2 years ago he never sat down. Now he often sits when he's not playing. Saw Don Was there and asked if they had recorded the concert. He replied that Charles records all his concerts. It was all very contemplative with (IIRC) no up-tempo songs but I was shocked when they took their first (pre-encore) bows. I thought they been playing about 25 minutes. Turns out it was more than an hour. I guess I was mesmerized as were most of the audience. Two encores later they'd played about 90 minutes without leaving the stage. T Quote
BFrank Posted March 15 Report Posted March 15 The Lobero would be a GREAT place to see him. A shame it wasn't sold out, but he probably plays there somewhat often. Quote
kh1958 Posted March 16 Report Posted March 16 Looking forward to seeing Charles Lloyd on opening night at the Big Ears Festval. Yesterday, I attended the Fifth Annual Fort Worth African American Roots Music Festival at Southside Preservation Hall. The highlights were: Reverend Robert Jones, Sr.: These days, an accomplished acoustic blues player is a rarity. From Detroit, he played songs by Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie Johnson, Son House, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, and Washington Philips, among others, as well as fine original material. Rising Stars Fife and Drum Band. Otha Turner's grandaughter, who he named his successor when she was 7, carries on the tradition of this Mississippi band. Yasmin Williams: A really amazing acoustic guitar player. Quote
BFrank Posted March 17 Report Posted March 17 Just saw an outstanding show at SFJAZZ tonight: Craig Taborn w/Tomeka Reid and Ches Smith Opening was the Avishai Cohen Quartet who were very good, too Quote
T.D. Posted March 18 Report Posted March 18 Tomorrow, jazz night at a pizza parlor. Mike Jackson and Kevin McNeal (guitars), Rich Syracuse (bass), Jeff Siegel (drums)...Hey, the snow has melted, travel is easier and I have pent-up live music demand.😉 Quote

She has really re-invented the cello. Been lucky to see her several times. Pic from last year's Big Ears: Tomeka Reid Quartet w/Jason Roebke (bass), Mary Halvorson (guitar), Tomas Fujiwara (drums) Quote
ejp626 Posted March 22 Report Posted March 22 Back from seeing Gary Smulyan at the Rex with Neil Swainson and Terry Clarke. Lot of fun and generally high energy, esp. the final song of the last set. Small chance I would go tomorrow which is the the land night of their mini-residency. If transit cooperates, I'm a bit more likely to go Sun. evening to see Frank Botos, Kirk McDonald and Lorne Lofsky. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted March 24 Report Posted March 24 Last Thursday Mat Maneri, Lucien Ban, John Hebert & Randy Peterson two 54-56 minute sets. 7 new pieces (5 from Mat & 2 from Lucien) which are to be recorded to become “Mist”. Mostly very slow & even slower. second set especially spectacular with Mat playing at the highest level. The group improvisations within these slow often molasses tempos were tear inducing in an extremely emotional way for me. Randy Peterson rules the universe. Best jazz drummer on the planet. At least in this context. Swing High, Swing Higher Seeing Ahmed tomorrow night Tamarindo with Malaby, Brandon Lopez & Nasheet Waits on 4/6. Another kind of greatest jazz drummer in the world John Zorn’s Cobra on 4/5 / Ches Smith has something to say about the above as well:) Quote
Aggie87 Posted March 25 Report Posted March 25 Caught The Bad Plus last night in Phoenix. It was a fine show, mostly stuff from their most recent album, Complex Emotions. I was more familiar with the music from their 3-man lineup with Ethan Iverson, but after he (and later Orrin Evans) left, they added Chris Speed on reeds and Ben Monder on guitar. I was familiar with Monder's older albums, but was curious to see him in a group like this, and he didn't disappoint. Speed is a remarkable sax (and clarinet) player. I'll have to check out further work of his. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 25 Report Posted March 25 Speed goes too far out for my tastes. I haven't caught one of his gigs in a long while because of it. I was a bit bummed out that Javon Jackson canceled his 3/22 Boston appearance due to lack of ticket sales. I still think part of the reason was that it was advertised as a project with the late Nikki Giovanni, implying that it would be a melding of Jazz and poetry. While I don't have a problem with that, a lot of purists do, so I am not surprised that sales lagged. He should have advertised it as his quartet interpreting her lyrics but he didn't want to do that. Instead, it was canceled. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted March 26 Report Posted March 26 (edited) Ahmed was fantastic. Very demanding and stringent. Full house at Roulette. Probably 350-400 in the crowd. So many young people. Lots of the long time community in attendance. Very gratifying. Standing ovation which is rare. Edited March 26 by Steve Reynolds Quote
