Hardbopjazz Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 Now what about those recent discovered alternative takes? Will we get a disc in the mail? I have the complete 8 CD set of The Classic Quartet: Complete Impulse! Studio Recordings, thses new recording will not make the set complete anymore. Quote
Rosco Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 That set hasn't been 'Complete' for a while; I believe the 2CD versions of 'Coltrane' and 'Ballads' includes material discovered since the box came out including a studio take of 'Impressions', IIRC. Quote
bertrand Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 I will hold off on buying the Complete Impulse Coltrane until a 20-CD set is released in 2025. Bertrand. Quote

Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 You guys actually believe the record industry is going to let the CD exist that far in the future? They're going to be leasing (not selling) the (incomplete) 8-CD Impulse set in a "CD reproduction" format the way they're selling the LP reproduction CDs now that don't have any bonus tracks even when we all know they exist. But the actual item will not exist since the conversion to downloading will make physical objects obsolete. You will get an on-screen picture of what the packaging looked like, though. Mike Quote

Mike ← I've been thinking that's the future of recorded music for a while now. We'll be WELL on our way in 5 years, I bet (if not sooner). Quote
JSngry Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 I'm thinking that the whole shebang is going to be available on one of those flash drive things, and that I'll get it and toss it out, thinking that it's a usedup lighter. Planned obsolescence! Quote

dave9199 Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 I bet a music player of yet unknown format will be implanted into every person in the world so we can listen to whatever we want and no one else can hear it after too many complaints about noise pollution. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 In your sentence, I would just replace "whatever we want" with "whatever They want". Mike Quote
Aggie87 Posted September 9, 2005 Report Posted September 9, 2005 How worthwhile is the additional music on the "Coltrane" and "Ballads" deluxe editions? In other words, if I already have the "Complete" Classic Quartet box, are these worth picking up? Quote

In other words, if I already have the "Complete" Classic Quartet box, are these worth picking up? ← I don't think so. The Ballads stuff definitely gets dull after a while -- not a lot of variety between takes. The number of alternates on the deluxe Coltrane is excessive. On the other hand, the deluxe ALS is essential. Guy Quote

The 4 versions of Tunji on the 2nd Coltrane disk, however, are quite a fascinating listen. That Tunji stuff is a bit like the extra disk to the Atlantic set: you will not listen to it often, but it does have something to offer. Quote
Sundog Posted September 9, 2005 Report Posted September 9, 2005 The "Coltrane" deluxe version is quite good. I second the thought that the multiple versions of Tunji found on disc 2 are worth a listen. Quote
l p Posted September 10, 2005 Report Posted September 10, 2005 the 8-cd set is also missing the alternate take of dusk dawn. it's on the reissue of Kulu Se Mama. Quote
montg Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 I'd like to start exploring Coltrane's impulse recordings--I only have ALS and the Africa Brass sessions. I'm wondering if the best way to go would be to acquire the complete quartet box or the individual CDs instead. The Impulse discography of Trane is confusing (to me at least). Verve has sliced this salami in so many ways I can't figure out sometimes whether a CD is a compilation or a straight reissue. So, the 'complete box' seems to be the most direct route, but then would I be missing out on material from the individual CDs that I would regret missing? Quote

Virtually all of them can be found. Other than incompleteness (and Impulse! knew damn well that it was incomplete when they issued it. Unissued tracks began showing up on new compilations almost immediately), the programming on the box pretty much sucks. For example, half of "Crescent" is tacked on to half of "Ballads" on one ridiculous disc. When I bought the box, I later regretted selling my individual CDs. I then made CDRs equivalent to what I sold. Edited May 4, 2006 by John L Quote

One thing to keep in mind is that the box does not include the live half of Live at Birdland so you will have to pick that up separately. Guy Quote
montg Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 'Crescent' and 'Live at Birdland' are two I was most interested in and already I can see problems going the box route. Thanks for the feedback, I'll just go with the individual CDs, probably starting with Crescent. Quote

Mike 40 years ago, i bought the ones HE wanted me to hear. that's all i care about. But 40 years ago "he" couldn't put more than about 40 minutes of music onto one album. Considering many of his pieces are in the 10 minute range, that didn't leave room for very many cuts. Quote
