Guest akanalog Posted December 22, 2005 Report Share Posted December 22, 2005 no trolls but i have noticed two things- 1. people are becoming more pretentious around here. insulting people, telling them to read flaubert, answering questions with more obtuse questions, writing as if they are thurston moore talking about a rare frank wright album...style and ego over substance i guess i am saying. i dunno-people like jsngry seem to be full of substance but still exude their original flavor which i think is the pinnacle of this particular online experience. he is a shining example of a good poster. 2. "specialists'-people who don't seem interested in jazz really but instead are interested in one particular artist or subject found on this board and stay within these boundaries which i find weird (be it a particular rock artist or politics) and in some cases act like they are the undisputed expert in this particular subject area. but i mean it is none of my business and i am not sure why it bothers me. i guess if one lives in certain areas of the country or has less than ideal social situations or is just very passionate about something this board is probably a great resource to discuss certain things, jazz or otherwise. Innocent ribbing is one thing, but the assaults are not cool. Of course, it is worst in the politics forum (naturally), hence I keep mine to myself... but it has been getting a little tense on the board. Now, as for nichifying oneself, well, that seems okay to me, but not at the expense of other people's feelings. I don't know shit about traditional jazz or about rock music, but would not welcome mockery when posting on these subjects. For about a week (OK, a little less) I was debating whether to give the boards a real long breather, but at the end of the day, what can you do but just live your life and keep on posting? I remember spending a wonderful Christmas break reading "Madame Bovary" and "L'Education Sentimental" in my fiancee's grandmother's basement (where they made me sleep until we got married)... Part of it, at least in my own case, is that while I LOVE the music, I can't write worth a damn about music. I listen attentively, buy discs, etc, but putting it into a written form eludes me so far. Since I arrived here mostly clueless about jazz (and still not far from clueless compared to some), everyone here and the BNBB has been exceedingly helpful in advising my jazz collecting. The extensive to-buy list I have compiled from reading posts here now makes me feel as if every time I buy a jazz album, it will be a great one. I dig the enthusiasm for this artform we all love, the cool personalities and friendly atmostphere, the sheer depth of jazz knowledge of many of the most prolific posters, the endless political bickering, the sexy album covers thread...I like the whole shebang more than any one poster could distract so much as to ruin my experience.
