slide_advantage_redoux Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 (edited) My wife and I watched "The 40 yr old Virgin" tonight, and we had widely differing opinions on what we saw. My wife contends that this is a very sexist movie, and quite immature. She says I owe her a chick flick now. No problem there, because I actually like some movies thought of as "chick flicks" What do you think about this movie? I didn't get the impression that my wife did. I rather enjoyed it, and I was pleased that this guy actually stuck to his guns - so to speak - and just didn't change himself to get laid. He met a lady he liked, fell in love, and when he had sex, it was on his emotional terms. Also, the movie was hilarious. My wife laughed maybe twice during the whole thing. RDK Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 Your wife is, hmmm, a woman. Most guys i know thought this hilarious. Actually, most women i know liked the flick... Quote
GregK Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 i thought it was funny. not sexist. It shows how immature the male characters in the movie are, in fact. Quote
Dmitry Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 My wife thought it was quite funny. But then again she moved here from Europe only about 4 years ago... Quote
jazzbo Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 My wife and I both enjoyed this film, saw it on the first weekend of its release. Quote
Guy Berger Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 I thought the first half was funny, but it wasn't as good once it turned into a romantic comedy. Guy Quote
jazzmessenger Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 My wife and I also enjoyed the movie very much. Quote
sheldonm Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 My better half said it was stupid but she laughed all the way through it.....especially the hair waxing episode! m~ Quote
HolyStitt Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 IMHO, the best movie of 2005. ..and this is coming from someone that has seen all the Academy Award nominated movies and easily another 30 films released in 2005. I thought Steve Carell was wonderful and the casting was perfect. I would have never imagined that Catherine Keener would turn out so perfect for the role she played. I like the fact that they didn't feel they had to have the actual loss of his virginity turned into a big joke or classless act. As you said slide_advantage_redoux, he found someone he was interested in, fell in love, and then had sex when he was ready. Though I have to say Carell made the movie, with anyone else in the role the movie wouldn't work. Can you imagine Will Ferrell pulling off the role? Quote
JSngry Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 Imagining Will Farrell pulling off is something I would want to avoid at all costs. Quote
HolyStitt Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 Imagining Will Farrell pulling off is something I would want to avoid at all costs. Exactly! Will Ferrell is not as subtle. Quote
catesta Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 It was like one big long episode of Three's Company. In other words, stupid. Quote
.:.impossible Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 I think Steve Carrell is hilarious, but I thought this movie was sub-par for him. I saw the unedited version, which was way long. Subtle is not a word that comes to mind when I think of this movie. A lot of the gags were purely shock value. I'd say this movie was a near-miss for him and hope he takes on more challenging roles in the future. Quote
sal Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 I thought it was funny, but not hilarous. And most girls I've spoken to have loved t. Quote
Dave James Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 I went into this with fairly low expectations, but I wound up being pleasantly surprised. Far from anything of any lasting value, but enjoyable in its own way. Yards better than the dreck that's been foisted on an unsuspecting public of late by the likes of Vince Vaughn, the Wilson brothers, Ben Stiller or, heaven help us, Will Ferrell. Up over and out. Uncle Skid Posted July 16, 2006 Report Posted July 16, 2006 I thought it was kinda stupid overall, but there were some pretty funny moments. Catherine Keener was the highlight for me. The actress that played Carell's boss was pretty damn funny, too. Quote
HolyStitt Posted July 16, 2006 Report Posted July 16, 2006 Subtle is not a word that comes to mind when I think of this movie. I wouldn't either, I was talking about Carell's role. I just really dig his performance in this movie. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted July 16, 2006 Report Posted July 16, 2006 (edited) i know someone who is a 42 YO virgin and it ain't me........ i'm gonna be 39 YO this year Edited July 16, 2006 by Soulstation1 Quote
relyles Posted July 16, 2006 Report Posted July 16, 2006 Other than one or two laughs, I could not wait for it to end. Quote
BruceH Posted July 17, 2006 Report Posted July 17, 2006 My wife and I saw it in the theater when it first came out and had a great time. She laughed all the way through it. Yeah, there were quite a few shmeless jokes, but I saw it mainly for Carell and Judd Apatow (the director and co-writer) who produced Freaks & Geeks. Catherine Keener turned out to be a nice extra. The film had a bit more heart than I expected, and yeah, much of the immaturity on display was at the expense of the male characters, showing them to losers and so on. I'd like to see Carell's new film, Little Miss Sunshine, but don't recall seeing it in release yet. Maybe it came and went quickly, I don't know. Quote
Guest Chaney Posted July 17, 2006 Report Posted July 17, 2006 I'd like to see Carell's new film, Little Miss Sunshine, but don't recall seeing it in release yet. Maybe it came and went quickly, I don't know. In Theaters July 26 Ahhhh. Featuring the always wonderful Toni Collette. Quote

I should jump on this, 'cause I've got a feeling it won't be anywhere near the hit that "Virgin" was. Quote
