ghost of miles Posted February 24, 2010 Author Report Posted February 24, 2010 I bow before your awesomeness, sir! I remember staying up late to watch them on Saturday Night Live and being vastly disappointed/mystified when Elvis Costello showed up instead. (Wasn't old/hip enough to appreciate Elvis yet.) Quote
rostasi Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 I bow before your awesomeness, sir! at the 2:52 point in the video is the girl who introduced us! Rod Quote
GA Russell Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 So who would buy the catalogue from Citibank? Concord? Quote
Chalupa Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 I bow before your awesomeness, sir! Seriously. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 Never liked the Sex Pistols. They seemed to strive for an "amateur sound" and were able to achieve it at will. Yeah, the lyrics can be funny but the musicianship? Gaaack. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 I like Public Image better than the Sex Pistols. Quote
Brad Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 Hard to fathom how a giant like EMI could bite the dust but it doesn't matter how big you are: if you make bad financial decisions you will be in trouble. Quote
Quincy Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 yup! ...but I prefer this one ('cause my sweetheart and I were there): You fuckin' bunch of cowboys. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 They could auction the constituent labels off on E-bay I wonder how much Mali K7 would go for? MG Quote
rostasi Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 (edited) You fuckin' bunch of cowboys. Yeah...well, the asshole factor was certainly double around these parts. Six months earlier in Chicago, I only had to deal with suburban rockers who wanted to beat the shit outta me! Edited February 26, 2010 by rostasi Quote
Big Wheel Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 Dead or alive, EMI seems to be gradually getting religion on downloads at least - many BN albums are on sale in mp3 format on Amazon now for $3.68. Or is this just a temporary promotion? In any case I think the article that kicked this thread off doesn't argue the its points very well. He basically says that taking DRM off mp3 downloads is what ultimately killed EMI, because then everyone just started pirating their stuff rampantly. (Because at the time, it was impossible to rip CDs and bittorrent them anyway??) Seems like the real problem was simple oversupply: in an environment of downloading, legal and otherwise, people just didn't want to keep plunking down $18 for CDs, and eventually a tipping point was reached where they just stopped buying them. (Because at the time, it was impossible to rip CDs and bittorrent them anyway??) Yeah, that was total nonsense. People never needed a DRM-free iTunes store to get DRM-free versions of EMI's music. It was there for everyone to pirate all along - on the regular CDs... Quote
gmonahan Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 So, which label materials do they own? Capitol, Blue Note, Pacific Jazz, Roost, and Roulette, at least, right? What others? gregmo Quote

What others? gregmo Those are just the jazz holdings. They also own tons and tons of other imprints in other genres. (Other EMI jazz labels off the top of my head: Liberty, Jubilee, United Artists, Solid State, Aladdin, Jazz West. I thought they also owned Elektra Musician but Wikipedia suggests it's a Warner holding. Maybe they only got part of the EM catalog like the Bird and Diz Washington concerts?) Quote

Pretty sure it's Warner's. Elektra is the "E" in WEA. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 So, which label materials do they own? Capitol, Blue Note, Pacific Jazz, Roost, and Roulette, at least, right? What others? gregmo As well as the ones you and others have listed, there's Pathe (France only - the US division of Pathe is part of Sony/BMG) Pathe Marconi Mali K7 (Mali) JAT Music (Cote d'Ivoire) Creon Music (Cote d'Ivoire) Parlophone Zonophone (this is the firm that owns the HMV dog trademark - originally Victor's British subsidiary, I think) Regal Zonophone (well known for its Salvation Army and Joe Cocker recordings ) HMV Columbia (UK) Beacon (UK) HEMIsphere EMI Gospel Sparrow (another Gospel label) Jubilee/Josie Laurie Double L - not sure of this; it was a partnership between Lloyd Price & Liberty Minit World Pacific Aura Tico Shelter UA Solid State Musicor Virgin Caroline Virgin's Front Line Earth Works Real World Blackground Point Blank Narada Narada Jazz Plus many others from other parts of the world. It wouldn't surprise me if EMI didn't own a chunk of Toshiba. MG Quote
GA Russell Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 I have a cassette of somebody on the Sue label, I think Jimmy McGriff, which is an EMI product. Quote
