Red Holloway Passes at 84

After Eddie Lockjaw Davis had died, Red Holloway who used to play with Jaws came to Vienna quite often. I remember him well. Very good musician, and such a nice guy. Once I took a person who before that was unfamiliar to jazz, to the club to catch a show with Red Holloway and he sure liked it.

I saw him play with Sonny Stitt at Mac's, 100 Oxford Street in London in about 1982. (I think you saw them there, too, JohnS?) Wikipedia is giving yesterday as the date of his death, which would make him 84.

Sad news indeed. I saw him at a venue near Croydon IIRC Bill. Stitt was nearing the end and wasn't looking so good but they played really well.

Another classic bit of Chicago music Red was on

Otis Rush - I can't quit you baby - Cobra, 1956

I think I've got all of Red's albums except 'Sax, strings and soul', on Prestige, which Fantasy never reissued.

Well...

A really booting tenor player, whom I love. But on alto, very different, very lyrical. I think I like him even more on alto.
