ejp626 Posted July 4 Posted July 4 I'm reading Ariel Dorfman's The Last Song of Manuel Sandero, which I am not particularly enjoying. Not sure yet whether I will finish it. Also reading Douglas Coupland's Microserfs. Much more interesting, even though it is intentionally written in a very flat style. Quote
GA Russell Posted July 6 Posted July 6 The author's first novel. Much, much better than I expected. Quote

Hoping it holds up I started reading Salvatore's Spearweilder's tale (originally published in 1993) and realized after a few chapters that I did read it back then. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 9 Posted July 9 (edited) Realized this was a Cornell Woolrich (unfinished, completed by Lawrence Block) I had not read before. . . . Woolrich fascinates me as a writer. Edited July 9 by jazzbo Quote

jazzbo Posted July 11 Posted July 11 Yes. Chandler is one of my all time favorites--I love the very way he writes. There are three writers that I think have really influenced my mind in my adult life: Raymond Chandler, Philip K. Dick and Henry Miller. Â Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I am finding myself laughing out loud a lot while reading book 5 of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. Twisted stuff but I do enjoy that type of humor. Yes, that thing he's about to throw is what you think it is. Â Quote
Holy Ghost Posted July 20 Posted July 20 (edited) A.R. Ammons. Worldly Hopes.  My mentor, who aspired me to become a better reader, thinker, and writer (many more mentors also involved, e.g., KK1) and reading Worldy Hopes all the way through again on the back patio this morning, watching bunnies and listening to Snow Patrol just refuels the fuel to keep writing.  Edited July 20 by Holy Ghost Quote
GA Russell Posted July 22 Posted July 22 My grandmother told me that she and her girlfriends used to get together with various Red Sox players. She mentioned Speaker and Hooper. Quote

Brad Posted July 30 Posted July 30  Just finished reading this absolutely brilliant book about the Jena set and how they championed the idea of the self and nature, and imagination. The center of the book is Caroline Schlegel-Schelling, a woman who was ahead of her time. Andrea Wulf’s books are always compelling. Quote
