There's few I've ever warmed to (whilst I have hundreds of ECMs), off the top of my head Sakata, Tolliver, Gary Thomas and a Woody Shaw. Count me intrigued. We all have our own tastes. But for me, given the quality of ingredients and cooking, Enja is probably one of the worst contenders of all record labels. It took me a while to identify that it was probably the label's production values. Edited March 3, 2024 by Rabshakeh Quote

Peter Friedman Posted March 3, 2024 Report Posted March 3, 2024 With only some limited exceptions, my preference is for there to be a piano or guitar on horn albums. The harmonic addition ( along with the piano or guitar solos) greatly enriches the music for me. So this is not among my favorite Joe Henderson recordings. I do realize that many here hold a different opinion. Quote

Which is a shame, because it's right in the chronological sweet spot for me, and it has a great catalogue of musicians. I'm aware that this is a minority view. Fair enough! Quote

It took me a while to identify that it was probably the label's production values. I don't have that many Enja titles, but I fairly recently accumulated a reasonable number via 1800 yen Japanese reissue threefers. I also find the Enja sound very dry. Bass-heavy seems plausible (I'm listening to a recently acquired Abdullah Ibrahim set right now), though I'd have to listen a bit more to say. But if I turn the volume up (louder than I ordinary listen) the sound livens up and becomes more enjoyable. Weirdly, I seemingly have to listen to Enja recordings at a higher perceived loudness than other labels. I thought the Ibrahim discs I'm listening to now were lemons until I had the bright idea (only tonight) to crank up the volume. Quote

soulpope Posted March 4, 2024 Report Posted March 4, 2024 Regard the "Enja Sound" : don't have a problem with releases til the late(r) 70's, subsequently a "clinical sound" with less dynamics and bass takes over .... Quote

jazzbo Posted March 4, 2024 Report Posted March 4, 2024 Mel Powell “It’s Been so Long” Vanguard cd To include the title of a Cannoball album, this is “sophisticated swing” indeed. I almost have all of Powell on Vanguard in one form or another. Great music. Quote
