They're made just a couple of miles from our home, although they have several plants scattered in Collegedale. The McKee family, which founded and owns the company that makes these snacks, threatened to leave Hamilton County a few years back when there was talk of possibly expanding a nearby landfill. Needless to say, they pay enough taxes and provide enough employment that the landfill was closed and another was opened elsewhere in the county.

Not good... getting that close to you could be an indication that it is rabid. They generally stay far away from humans.

No, I don’t believe it’s rabid. My wife had left out some food for a neighborhood cat and he didn’t show up that day. Last year a whole family showed up and when I went to get my camera they had disappeared. Where we live we have rabbits, raccoons, foxes and possums.

When I lived in NJ (Medford), we would often get raccoons very close to our home.  More than once I went to take the trash out and found one inside of our trash bin, lid closed behind it, snarling at me as if I'd disturbed it's buffet dinner.  Had to take the bin out to the driveway and set it down on its side and lift the lid and let the raccoon run off, still mad at me.

It makes sense to me that they'd be scavenging that close to your window, given the food left out for cats.

Racoons are one of the animals I haven't seen out here in my rural area. I saw them last in Austin, a family was living under a neighbor's house there. Quite a story bout their removal that I will spare the forum.

I have heard coyotes but only seen one in 12 years. Deer, unusually more now than normal. Foxes, yes, ground hogs yes, think what I saw twice was a badger, not sure. Eagles, hawks, buzzards, geese, owls, woodpeckers a plenty, hear and see more turkeys than I ever expected to. People in neighboring areas have reported bear activity. Apparently about 20 years ago there were some in the wildlife preserve across the street, oddly sighted the same year that was a huge population of turtles in the lake down the hill from us. . . but neither bear nor lots of turtles here since.

Serengeti National Park, 9 June 2026

Many years ago a friend started telling me about a girlie club in South Africa called The Zebra Club.  "That must be the place where asses of all stripes gather together", I remarked.

I stopped bringing our (then young) daughters to these portable fair rides after reading several stories of their lack of safety inspections, causing several accidents, a few resulting in dead children. But that was a long time ago... I would hope these days they are safer.

We probably haven’t been to the fair in 15 years. They hold it at the town park where I go for breakfast and walk in the morning.

Chipmunks are all over our property again. . . which means an owl will probably return to claim this property as happens periodcially. A good thing--I really like owls around.

We used to have owls but I don’t see or hear them anymore.
