32Jazz did a Carlos Garnett comp from his five albums, and the runtime was only 40 minutes, 1/3 of which was 'Taurus Woman' 😟

I've not heard that one -- and it sounds like I don't need to!  ;)

You don't.  Journey To Enligjtenment and Let This Melody Ring On are the two essential albums.  Mother of The Future is the key track on Black Love, but Garnett did a far superior version of it on Norman Conmors' Slewfoot album(blasphemous as that sounds).

Interesting.   I think I'd rate Black Love as my favorite -- in no small part due to Dee Dee Bridgewater's vocals.

But I dig Journey and Let This Melody too.

Ltd Edition vinyl, I bet $30 is their price point and it would have to be some unknown and impossible to find release that they would ever get anything from me.

And of all the recordings to choose from at the start, its the Roy Brooks again? (Oh but its never been issued in this extra special, massively overpriced vinyl!)

How is $30 massively overpriced for a record? Adjusted for inflation, $30 today is about $6 in 1972 when this album was released. $30 is absolutely reasonable for this level of quality in a modern vinyl pressing. I would actually expect the price point to be closer to $40, which is still not unreasonable.

Because it serves no purpose whatsoever, "heavy" vinyl, 'remastered from original tapes' with zero improvement over the sound of a CD - which can also store worthy alternate takes and unissued tunes and this vinyl-only series cannot do that.

Sorry if you can't comprehend that not everyone is a committed audiophile desperate to shell out approximately a dollar per minute of recorded sound.  The only time I ever did that was $30 for a Japanese RVG Cd of what must have originally been a 10 inch Hank Mobley LP. Nothing on the Muse label is worth a dollar a minute not even for extra heavy vinyl and extra "special" remastering.

And glad you got the Muse issue rather than the hideous 32jazz issue.  What were Dorn & Co. thinking?

I would pay for a CD upgrade of this one, my all-time favorite jazz album, especially with the Mosaic box bonus cut:

My current version is on this.  I cashed in on my Mosaic box, a decision I have mixed feelings about.   There's so much that could be done with the Muse catalog.

Yeah, couldn't believe it, only $8 used, no 32 Jazz reissue.

CD issued has the original sleeve art you see above, music is terrific, my favorite Shaw, even passes Rosewood by a smidge, which is a fantastic record! Understudy of the 70's, he deserves so much more credit. Fantastic writer and musician!

Not a Muse, but we are talking about Woody Shaw, this has to be mentioned

$30 is the average price, or close to it, for new records today. It is definitely not great when you consider most people's salaries haven't been adjusted similarly...

Sadly, CD reissues just aren't selling like they used to. I still enjoy them (and sometimes buy them in protest when I don't want to mess with a potentially undercooked and overpriced new LP), but the writing seems like it's very nearly on the wall.

That album caused a big stir when it got released, including two grammy nominations.  Columbia, having one of their pro-jazz moments, was all in on publicizing it, but it was worthy.

When Zev released this announcement on FB today I asked him if there would be corresponding CDs for this project.
His response: "... this is an analog LP series. As of now exclusive to vinyl. Thanks for your support."

Fortunately I have a number of Muse albums on CD - including some of the ugly 32 Jazz releases and Woody Shaw's Muse Mosaic box. Still have some good vinyl too, but my LPs are in storage.

I could understand the disappointment for those who prefer the cd format. I wish they just do both. No need to always place the vinyl listener in the audiophile loony camp though.

I think it’s like Clifford mentioned: the vinyl market is more profitable at the moment. There aren’t a lot of labels that are lead primarily by the ideal of spreading the art. Most of them are just businesses who want to maximize their profits unfortunately.

I've never come across the Richard Davis Way Out West album.  Awful cover, but a killer lineup!

Would be nice if they did these:

I don't think I've heard any of Richard Davis' Muse LPs. I keep meaning to, but never go the extra step of acquiring any. Are they worth shelling out the money? I doubt I'd like "As One" very much.

Epistrophy & Now's The Time, Primary, 1 of 4

I got the cd of this from Dusty Groove for $5. Dusty must have had a source from an old distributor or something, they seemed to have a ton of Muse cds for that price a few years ago.

also got that CD cheaply 15 years or so ago...  musically, it's about what you'd expect... the CD does have about 20 minutes of bonus material... looks like buying the cd cheaply is no longer an easy option at this point
