  1. Ella Fiitzgerald - The Lost Berlin Tapes

I'll let someone with far better ears than mine make that comparison! gregmo
  2. So, What Are You Listening To NOW?

I was lucky enough to get this one quite a while back. I think this Japanese cd reissue was available for about five minutes.
  3. Ella Fiitzgerald - The Lost Berlin Tapes

I've been listening to the cd, and it sounds good to me--typical live recording--but Ella is really on fire in much of it. gregmo
  4. So, What Are You Listening To NOW?

Closed my eyes, and my finger landed on this one, an odd little bit of West Coast jazz:
  5. Bob Gibson -- RIP

What an amazing pitcher he was. Intense and fast as lightning. There's a nice eulogy/analysis of him here by Steven Goldman. gregmo
  6. Ella Fiitzgerald - The Lost Berlin Tapes

You're right. Jim was just being...Jim! Ella's 1960 version became so famous and successful, that, as Jim puts it, she remembered to forget the words from then on. gregmo
  7. Ella Fiitzgerald - The Lost Berlin Tapes

That was the more famous 1960 concert. gregmo
  8. Mosaic Wish List

If we're going back into the 20s, it would be nice to have a complete Ellington set of Sony-owned material. That old 2-cd set has lousy sound. gregmo
  9. Andy Kirk/Mary Lou Williams question re: Mary's Idea

According to Vincent Pelote's liners for the GRP Decca Jazz issue of the Andy Kirk cd "Mary's Idea," the soloists on the title track recorded December 1938 are Ted Donnelly (twice), trombone; Clarence Trice, trumpet; Williams, piano; and John Harrington, reeds. gregmo
  10. So, What Are You Listening To NOW?

Listening to the Porgy and Bess disc from this foundational set
  11. Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Playing myself through this one. Mosaic did a nice job with the Roulette label for a while:
  12. What happens to your collection?

My poor son will get to deal with it. I've drawn up some suggestions (including putting Mosaic boxes, booklets and cds back together!), but what he does will be up to him. I'll be past caring. gregmo
  13. Mosaic partials ...

Me too. I've actually written it down in a "last letter" for my son. And yes, it's hard being OC, but somebody has to do it! gregmo
  14. Every time I think this miserable year can't possibly get worse, it does.
  15. RIP Stanley Crouch

Like him or hate him, he was deeply devoted to the music. Well, to the music he liked anyway. And he loved Bird and Duke. RIP. gregmo
  16. So, What Are You Listening To NOW?

    The Original Master Recording version:
  17. So did I. And I see we were both playing it today as well! gregmo
  18. Well, they're ALL out of print, so if you buy any of it, you're buying it used. I don't think any money any longer goes back to whichever label first issued it. I wasn't endorsing the Andorran stuff, by the way (DEEP breath Steve!), simply pointing out that Mosaic is disinclined to do sets that those labels have already done. Well, except for Classics. Mosaic has done a lot of things that Classics has issued. It would be kind of hard not to. gregmo
