  1. I plan to ride my mountain bike to work and back every day, about 6.5 miles one way. Last summer was the first time in about 14 years that I had even been on a bike so I took it easy and only biked one way each day and had my wife drive me the rest of the time. Great way to get some good listening in on my mp3 player too
  2. maybe if she had the original Elvis (aka the KING) to play on it I'd check it out, but otherwise, umm, no
  3. whoever mentioned Sharp Provolone above (I'm tool azy to go back and check), THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I found some and tried it on a grinder my wife made for me. Wow, this is the best tasting cheese I have ever encountered!!
  4. I don't have the stamina to type all the worthless artists that bother me, but I have to agree with the comments about Dave Mathews, Ozzy/Sabbath, and I'd like to toss in (these are off the top of my head because I've heard this garbage in the last couple days): the Doors, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, and pretty much anything in rock and roll nowadays. Well, at the very least I have to acknowledge a lot of the recent popular crap for shoving me (very willingly!!) towards jazz!!!
  5. well, this is all I need to know about that magazine. I'm never buying it
  6. I try to watch this show every night; I think it's the funniest thing on TV, and, despite it's blatant liberal bias, I actually think the news coverage is valuable. They do try to book a decent balance of liberal/conservative guests too, when they aren't booking celebrities to just come on and discuss their latest movie.
  7. how do you plan on talking with him? Do you have something scheduled with him somehow? I'm confused. Ask him if he has any live CDs of these shows he's currently playing coming out soon
  8. Oh yes, I forgot about Lloyd. I wish I had seen him
  9. I'm quite pleased with the live music in Ann Arbor. Last Friday I saw Ornette Coleman, in February I saw Organissimo, and in the past 3 years I have seen Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock (both leading their own quartets and in a duet, 3 different shows) and Keith Jarrett. Plus, as mentioned above, the Bird of Paradise and Firefly Club have live jazz pretty much all week
  10. Atlantic, Village Vanguard, Impulse Quartet, Live in Europe (Pablo), and the Miles. I'd say I listen to the Village Vanguard and the Live in Europe ones the most. Thought about getting the compilation box titled Legacy if I see it for a good price
  11. well, I have the SACD too, but I'm not going to force it down anyone's throat, so it's gotta be the other guy!!
  12. this discussion makes me want to go pick up a couple CDs.
  13. man, you can't go wrong with any of those selections; I picked Exile because it's a double album so there's more music, but really I find all of them to be representative of the Stones at their best (even Goat's Head Soup!!). Anyone have any comments on the recent SACDs of their 60s reissues?
  14. never is it possible to have too many CDs. It took some convincing for my wife to accept that I need SACDs of CDs I already had 2 copies of (Japanese and US in some cases)
  15. that was my first thought too, when he picked it up-"that's the plastic one!!!!"
  16. Congratulations. Are you commuting between Ann Arbor-Detroit-Toledo? If so then I hope you have LOTS of patience; I-94 around Ann Arbor is about to start it's annual rage-inducing rebuilding make-work-project until Memorial Day. I feel truly sorry for those who must commute along the Interstates in southeastern Michigan! like you said, more time for listening to music!! Hey, maybe it will be easier for you to stick around on Fridays to check out the scene at the Firefly or the Bird!! Those Michigan drivers!!!
  17. so how do we convince him to release a concert like the one in Ann Arbor last night? Man I'd be first in line to buy it!!
  18. I believe Bill Evans shared your opinion
  19. What I wouldn't give for a CD of this concert. It was everything I was hoping for and much much more. Not only because of Ornette, but his band was simply excellent. They were on fire the whole night. I really enjoyed the 2 bassists- what a foundation they provided for Ornette!! Easily one of the best concerts the UMS has put on, ever. One thing that bothered me though, and which you folks in the front rows obviously missed: why were so many people getting up and leaving so early? Was this not what they expected? A lot of people were grabbing their coats and walking out between songs, as if they suddenly realized they were at the wrong show. Unbelievable! I'd like to know what they were expecting. To top it off, the person behind me was SNORING!!!!! I actually heard someone breathing deeply as if sleeping, then the snoring started (I noticed it around the 7th or 8th tune). How anyone can sleep through that music is something I can't understand.
  20. I've never listened to them but was always (lazily) curious about one thing: did they have a sound similar to Neil Young with Crazy Horse? From what others have told me and what I've read there was some influence there, actually going both ways. Neil himself put out his one-track CD of white noise, Arc, on the suggestion of these guys
  21. There's really not much to see in Detroit unless you're into big once-beautiful-but-now-empty buildings. The architecture of some of the downtown was stunning, and many buildings remain, although most are windowless and pretty empty (if you don't count the homeless people and the rats). You can literally see burned out, BRICK buildings downtown across from the fantastic Detroit Institute of Arts (if you like art, you must check it out). It's interesting to see at least once, but the real action is in the suburbs, like Dearborn, Royal Oak and of course Ann Arbor. However, the downtown of Detroit is on it's (uncountable) renaissance, so there are a few things to do, but I would advise against driving around looking for where so-and-so lived, for example. The violence has picked up lately in the 'hoods. If you go to Canada, then you are in Canada, not DETROIT, so I don't see the point if you are wanting to visit Detroit. Where in Canada can you buy codeine? I grew up in Canada and don't ever recall being able to buy codeine over the counter. I must have missed something
  22. so who from this board will be at the concert? I'm excited to see the renovations to Hill, too
  23. I particularly like the Byrds albums after Sweetheart of the Rodeo. Easy Rider and Untitled are the ones I go to most frequently. Just something about that lonely late-60s feeling that make them special. I think their last 2 are worth hearing too (not counting that awful reunion record), and the live at the Fillmore disc that came ou 4 years ago is pretty good too, although not as thrilling as the live side of Untitled. Overall though the Byrds' entire body of work is excellent
