  1. well, it's good to see such opposite tastes!!
  2. I've always been partial to their first 2 releases and the Live in Tokyo double disc. I've found much of the rest to be pretty boring
  3. I have to heartily disagree. This makes my top 10 releases of the year, very near the top!
  4. I think this is one of the very best records of the year, by any stretch. I have listened to it consistently since I bought it. The trio pieces are fascinating, and that "ECM" sound suits the dynamics of the trio perfectly. Excellent release
  5. well, that's your opinion. I'm sure I will be ignoring it tomorrow when I am picking up a grande from StarBUCKS!!!!
  6. wow thanks for these photos Mr A!!! Great thread. Have any others featuring your MC gigs?? This is fantastic stuff
  7. Electric sounds better in progressive or avant-garde rock, like King Crimson, who has done some pretty interesting things with bass (the Stick and Warr Guitars, plus the electric upright and regular basses that Tony Levin uses), but for jazz my opinion is that the acoustic stand-up always sounds better. I tend to avoid jazz with an electric bass, unless it is, for example, Miles' late 60s and early 70s recordings
  8. I don't think that this is a real problem to be concerned about, because the disc itself wouldn't be freezing and thawing, it's simply the water (moisture) in the air which is condensing on the disc. If it freezes/thaws, no big deal. The disc itself shouldn't be affected. I am somewhat familiar with this, as I used to live in Canada and experienced many bitterly cold days, and the CDs always seemed to be perfectly fine once the condensation evaporated
  9. I am a big, big fan of the Band. Their first 2 albums are absolute classics, of any style of music. Fascinating musicanship and harmonies, and those songs are just some of the best rock songs that I have ever heard. I am discovering 70's Jarrett, specifically the European and the American quartets
  10. Chuck, I have a degree of the same problem here in Ann Arbor, at least amongst the people I work with (in a chemical/biotech company). You would think at least ONE of these U of M or MSU grads would have the slightest appreciation for jazz, but music is Bob Seger or nothing to them!!
  11. this is unbelievable!! Is this the first SACD hybrid showing in BMG? I wonder if these are the digipaks
  12. happy b'day!!!
  13. just curious: Why you sellin?
  14. I notice the same thing!! Everybody here makes good points, which is very reassuring. It's good to realize that there are intelligent people out there who do actively listen to jazz (or any music). I just can't imagine not hearing all the wonderful elements that are in a good jazz tune, which you can't possibly pick up if it's relegated to the "background"
  15. I find that whenever I mention to someone from the pop-rock world that I listen to jazz, or if I see someone looking at a jazz CD I had lying around, I always get the "oh, I like jazz, it's great background music" line. This used to puzzle me, now it just makes me frustrated. Why do so many people consider jazz so dismissively? To me, jazz is something to be listened to actively, in the foreground!!
  16. I've always liked the Band's own songs much more than their Dylan covers. I bought the Basement Tapes for their performances and their songs, which not only make at least a little more sense than Bob-o's do, but also are just plain more interesting. I know I'm in the minority, but I find there to be way too much Dylan worship as it is
  17. or Guns and Roses doing ANYTHING
  18. A lot of people seem to either not know about, or simply disregard Hawks and Doves, from 1980. It's a short (30 minutes) little record, fascinating folky tunes on the first side and redneck country on the other side (vinyl, at least). It was just released on CD for the first time last August and well worth a listen. It doesn't really compare to anything else in his catalog
  19. Don't forget his absolute, stunning masterpiece Nebraska from 1982. Damn this record needs to be remastered, soon!!!
  20. yes "Shinehead" (remember the Sinatra Group??) and Nora Dunn and Jan Hooks were upset about Diceman being on the show so they all sat that one out.
  21. The U of Michigan Museum is fantastic. A little small, but they do seem to attract some interesting exhibits. Worth a look next time you visit Ann Arbor or Detroit
  22. wow, this topic is suddenly very popular. Here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=2309 and http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=5322
  23. I recently asked about this box in another thread in the Box Sets category. Apparently it seems to be pushed back to March, as is typical of Sony/Legacy
  24. man, Amen to that. Absolute crap-ola
