I found Stone/Water and Images, both on Okka Disk, to be fairly assessable as well. Give him another try, there's a lot of great music to be discovered here!

I sorta worked backwards in this order to Black Fire out of those flurry of incredible dates that started his BN career: Judgment! Point of Departure Smoke Stack then finally Black Fire. I still like Judgment! best out of this batch, but Black Fire is still a great date. On the other hand when it comes to his entire BN output, I reach for other Hill dates more often than BF, like Compulsion!!!, Dance with Death, Andrew!!! or Passing Ships. Oh screw it, I love them all!

Another Organissimo member was there??? Aw man, wish I knew I was in row G seats 103, 104, left flank. We stayed after they finished the set, despite people racing for the door and glad we did; those people missed another 15 mins of music. I agree with your synopsis above, great show. I liked how Roy recovered in the first 10 mins of the show, when his trumpet malfunctioned by grabbing his flugelhorn to finish the piece. What was really impressive though was his pocket trumpet playing with the many sounds he was able to get out of it with his mute and hand. Chad Taylor was a surprise too (did you see where he dismantled his high-hat and used it as another cymbal, to add extra sounds to the mix?) What a really versatile percussionist. Grimes and Ribot were spot on through the entire set and besides a single cd "Don't Blame Me" this is my first real exposure to Ribot's playing, which reminded me of Derek Bailey in parts where he would adjust his amp and make it sound like it wasn't even plugged in. Grimes nailed it, like you said, with his arco and pizzicato playing and he can swing! It was great just watching him play. How did you get to meet Henry Grimes? We stuck around for about 15 mins after the show hoping to see him or the band milling about, but to no avail. Really glad to have seen this band. Maybe this will serve as an incentive for other advant garde acts to come to Cleveland. Edit to add a photo I snapped of Henry Grimes' bass after the show:

Although they're not cd's, two records I own have "Charle Mingus" on the spine of Jazz Portraits and my copy of MJQ/Milt Jackson Quintet has Kenny Clarke listed on bass on the back of the jacket.

Its hit or miss. They price a West 50th Street Prestige in reasonable condition for $3.98 and a Prestige OJC for a $100 (this actually happened. I looked at the LP and told them it was an OJC and they knocked $90 off LOL!). Whatever. Their inexperience with jazz lps at the location near me has paid off tremendously.

The 2009 release of Disco 3000 is the single CD version, the one this thread is about and whose cover is posted above is a 2CD-set, as you can see in the thread title. Wow, anyone know why Artyard re-released this set the following year with 8 fewer tracks?

A routine stop at Half Price tonight yielded some astonshing finds: Charles Mingus-Jazz Portraits-United Artists. Strong seams and tight corners with no ring wear. Vinyl is VG+ with a lots of shine. Has the original inner sleeve and even has a "Jazz Newsletter" included...for $5.98!!! Modern Jazz Quartet/Milt Jackson Quintet-Prestige 7059. Nice heavy laminated cardboard sleeve with no seam splits, tight corners bright colors and very little ring wear. Vinyl is acceptable but when I looked closer at the labels, I couldn't believe my eyes when it had the West 50th street address, a deep groove and RVG in the dead wax! Vinyl is real heavy too and the back of the jacket has the West 50th street address as well. The only real blemish is that someone wrote "MJQ" with a magic marker on the back corner of the jacket but at least they wrote it neatly. The real shocker is that they priced this one at $3.98!!!!!!!!!!!! With my discount, I walked out the door with both records for under $10!
