  1. How about both a musical and a bossa nova: Bill Barron Orchestra-West Side Story Bossa Nova (1963) on Dauntless. It's got Kenny Burrell, Steve Kuhn, Henry Grimes and Charlie Persip on it.
  2. I have a copy of Phineas Newborn Jr's "Jazz Interpretation of Harold Arlen's Music from "Jamaica" on RCA. Terrific band including Jimmy Cleveland, Jerome Richardson, Sahib Shihab and George Duvivier.
  3. Man, some of you guys are pretty lucky catching this quintet in action. I've been really enjoying the lost quintet stuff lately (mostly through Youtube vids), but especially after I just scored a copy of 1969 Miles Festiva De Juan Pins, which hasn't really left the player for a full day now. While looking around on Youtube, I also found this pretty amazing clip of high quality: http://www.youtube.c...B18F63&index=41 I've also been trying to look around for other stuff to read on the board too, but not with a whole lot of luck. Can anyone direct me to where I can read more on the lost quintet? Thanks in advance.
  4. Incredibly lucky find at Half Price Books tonight: Miles Davis-1969 Miles Festiva De Juan Pins-Sony Japan, for a very reasonable $13.50. Also: Charlie Haden-Closeness: Duets-A&M
  5. Didn't even know about that Walter Bishop date. Thanks for posting this.
  6. Great shots, thanks for posting.
  7. Congrats! All the best!
  8. Wow, that Woody Shaw clip is a real tease!
  9. Happy birthday Bill! I really enjoy your contributions here, keep'em comin'!

    Bird's nest

Must be something to live in the same house that Bird did. What a rush.
  11. Wow, can't believe this one's OOP (those prices are through the roof!). I think its a pretty good date, if not a really good date (Monk's Dream is my favorite, but that may be because it was my first Columbia Monk date).
  12. Makes me homesick for my old town that actually had a record store. Buying at random on the internet is way too hard, I really love the "luck of the draw" nature of the used section. Yeah, me too. I mean the Cleveland area has some "hotspots" but overall it can be pretty drab here (I find the Pittsburgh and Chicago areas to be the best). So today I head over to the Coventry area where there are two stores: the Record Revolution and the Exchange. RR is essentially doing away with all their cd's and focusing on records only, so they've marked all their cd's down to 50 cents a piece! Nothing really exciting there, but they did have a sealed copy of Ernie Krivda Plays Ernie Krivda on CIMP, which I bought for the tidy sum of 54 cents. Unbelievable deal, but a sad reminder of the demise of cd's too. The exchange had a copy of Horace Silver Quintet's Silver's Blue for $7, which I bought in a split-second.
  13. I'm really sorry for your loss, all the best to you and your family.
  14. Just got around to watching this today. I was able to make out some things here and there, but not enough to put together all of the conversations. Still, the footage is worth watching alone! Thanks again for posting!
  15. Ginormous used cd haul throughout town: Jimmy Smith-Open House/Plain Talk-BN Oliver Nelson-Blues and the Abstract Truth-Impulse! (long overdue) Ornette Coleman Sound Museum-Hidden Man-Verve/Harmolodic Three Sounds-Live at the Lighthouse-BN Charlie Parker Memorial Vol. I-Savoy Jazz The five dollar bin, though is where some real great stufff showed up: Charlie Parker-Bird in Boston 1952-53-Vol. I-Fresh Sound Records Charlie Parker-Bird in Boston 1952-53-Vol. II-Fresh Sound Records Charlie Parker Memorial Vol. II-Savoy Jazz Sonny Criss Orchestra-Sonny's Dream-Prestige/OJC and the $2.50 bin wasn't too bad either: Johnny Griffin and Eddie Lockjaw Davis Quintet-Tough Tenors-Jazzland/OJC Peter Brotzmann/Bill Laswell-Low Life-Celluloid Jon Madof-Rashanim-Tzadik
  16. Late to the party, but happy birthday Paul!
  17. Yes, get it! The dual basses of Charlie Haden and Lewis Worrell deserve mention too, for creating a lot of tension in the music.
  18. I 100% agree. What an exemplary record, and a shout-out for Ron Carter too, who along with Herbie, Freddie and Tony, plays above and beyond himself. A shame there are so few records with Freddie in a quartet setting, a place where he really seemed to thrive.
  19. Late to the party, happy birthday!
  20. Thanks Big Al, picked it up today and quite glad I did!
  21. A couple of used Red Garland items: Rojo and At the Prelude
  22. What's everyone's opinion of Rojo? I can get one used for cheap and saw its OOP.
  23. An extremely solid set.
  24. A student of mine has "you're going to regret this" tattooed on his forearm; a peculiar foresight in my opinion.
  25. Late call, but agree with all that say this is a worthwhile purchase. This is great music that shouldn't be passed up!
