  2. Going to the regular autumn concert of an assocuation of young musicians and their followers to advance early music, I became a member earlier this year. Little concerts of ca. 20 minutes in the rooms of modern art galleries in the old part of Frankfurt. I will report. Three of the musicians rehearsing at the studio of the man who built the harpsichord, Christan Fuchs, who happens to work in the 18th century house where my grandparents lived until grandma died in 1959.
  3. I changed over to that myself after having Blue Note refused to fix a couple of very hot cuts in their LP reissues. When they acknowledged it on their Tone Poet of "Picture of Heath" and basically said, "Sucks to be you", that was my cue. This is how Blue Note addressed the issue: We’re aware of the complaints about the Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of Chet Baker & Art Pepper “Picture of Heath” from some customers who are experiencing skipping on side two, while for most it plays fine. We’ve looked into it and have determined there is no defect with the pressing. It is however a very dynamic recording and Joe Harley & Kevin Gray don’t use any limiting or compression in their mastering approach. That can expose the need for some adjustments to be made with particular turntable set-ups. For instance, we’ve found that customers who adjusted their tracking force and anti-skate (even slightly reducing both), and made sure their turntable is level, no longer had playback issues. We hope this helps!
  4. If I'm not mistaken, the last time he was in Europe was with the Giants of Jazz in 1972. I was busy with finishing school but had a classmate that enjoyed jazz like me, we went to about two concerts together before he left school due to some family/health issues, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Mann ... but the Giants, nowhere near where we lived, and I wasn't that deep into jazz history at age 18, reading Berendt and buying records whenever funds allowed. Will be fun meeting some other classmates at the end of the month. p.s. Just looked it up and saw he was in Europe in 1974, but I was then my mind was occupied with being in love with a girl that turned me down and whatever keeps one busy at that age ....
  5. Groove Holmes had no problem having women on his covers.
  6. Interesting arrangement, but man, that reverb! What the heck was the recording engineer thinking with adding that much echo? It makes it sound like they're playing in a huge cave. It has an almost "lounge music" sound.
  7. Today
  8. I was barely 20 when Stitt stopped playing live and much more likely to be found at a rock concert than a Jazz club.
  9. That's a point to ponder.
  10. I've been wondering whether the thesis is a bit inaccurate here and Patton would have been offended by any woman on his album cover regardless of color... That would be more consistent with what I know about islam
  11. Okay, thanks. That's sad. That does not look like a white woman to me. As I say looks eerily like my African American young neighbor in Philadelphia '57 to '66.
  12. November 15 Susie Ibarra - 1970
  13. The passage is in this thesis here, just search for "white woman" https://andybleaden.blogspot.com/2007/07/thesis-on-john-patton-by-javier.html?m=1 It says clearly that Patton was offended by the cover of That Certain Feeling...(It's even implied that the cover made him so bitter he left the music scene for a while)
  14. Album sleeve is amazing! Now:
  15. Curious about how many members heard Stitt in a club back in the day.
  16. One of my all-time favorite Christmas albums. Dorothy Ashby is such a badass.
  17. Spun this one today. I like Stitt with Patterson best, but this record is no slouch. The title track is a good groove.
  18. Have been listening to What Is To Be Done with Larry Ochs, Gerald Cleaver, and Mr Wilco this week. Clean Feed, 2019. Really good, ferocious without being offputting. I recommend!
  19. John Board!!!!
  20. Judging from the labels on the verso, I see only a few that are super expensive, and all of those have been reissued (Ra, Pullen-Graves, Black Unity Trio, and Cairo Free Jazz Ensemble). Cautiously hoping that it won’t be all flexing…
  21. I re-read Moby Dick a few years ago. Wow. Quite a novel. Just started
  22. Some recent reads: Now back to Moby Dick which I gave up for awhile.
  23. I have a few of their releases. They are indeed very good. Their IG account is indeed peculiar.
  24. I have all the ones I want to have on cd. It’s been a few years since I purchased a TP.
  25. My favorite from the above is At the DJ Lounge. Not only a Sonny favorite but a jazz favorite.
