  1. Past hour
  2. Could be. Where's Pete when we need him?
  3. oh that would be great !
  4. Interesting. I have a Clifford Brown-Max Roach vinyl very old and its also titled Basin Street but seems to be a studio record. It has mostly Richie Powell´s tunes, but also Dameron´s "The Scene is Clean".
  5. at least I can say I saw him live once. Was a great gig, he was together with Dee Dee Bridgewater on stage, it was double billing. So great. And a stellar rhythm section. One of my European favourites was on piano: Siegfried Kessler, he was soooo great always, with Archie Shepp etc. On bass was David Eubanks, it was after his tenure with Dex. He had double booking those days, he played with Jackie McLean and the next day with Jimmy Witherspoon/Dee Bridgewater. I can´t remember who was on drums. Too bad they did not record it. It was incredible !
  6. Gunesh - Gunesh Some 1980s Soviet jazz rock from Turkmenistan.
  7. Thanks Mark. You're a brave man to publish those sidebar lists! I'm so glad to see love for 'Transition' and 'Crescent', and such an eloquent description of the transcedence of 'A Love Supreme' (which was my sudden immediate gateway in jazz in 1972 when I first heard it).
  8. Yeah, that's true. Oftentimes the individual cds would be more expensive. And in some cases the box set is the only practical way to get the music.
  9. I often find them prohibitive in terms of both space and cost. I tend to do cost/benefit analysis as far as buying them and keeping them. I only kept a handful of the big Mosaic sets in my collection as the music became available in other CD configurations(though I've kept a lot Selects). Yet things like the 90's Atlantic boxes on Trane, Ornette, and Mingus and the Prestige boxes on Trane, Rollins, Miles, and Dolphy, and the Milestone Joe Henderson box are perfect for my needs. I tend to work straight through a box set when I listen to it, regardless of size.
  10. quintet with Marion Brown? the concert with the Ayler Brothers would be interesting to hear as well, if it were taped.
  11. Slightly 😝? Typical Concord fail.
  12. l would love to see a 1975 Miles Davis Japan tour box and the rest of the Coltrane Half Note stuff ("Creation"!). Would be nice to get the Olatunji concert on vinyl, too. We're more likely to get Miles 1987 live and The Gentle Side of John Coltrane remastered by an audiophile dudebro.
  13. Today
  14. Sam Ostropov - Blight Music Fun idea: a recent record exploring the kind of music that the David Murray Octet and others like it made in their prime. There are lots of roads that were never fully explored.
  15. I tried watching the first episode of Schitt's Creek and I'm not sure that I made it through all the way. It just didn't make me laugh,
  16. she was great (as is her sister Mary Margaret). RIP. Bummer news...
  17. The University Musical Society in Ann Arbor invited me to write about Miles and Trane at 100 in advance of a forthcoming concert the organization is presenting in homage to these landmark centenaries featuring Terence Blanchard and Ravi Coltrane. There's also a sidebar with my personal Top 10 lists for both Miles and Trane as leaders, plus some bonus tracks. 18. I used to buy a fairly large number of box sets, now not so many.
  19. Judging from the cast, it must have been! But I stopped watching TV in 2010 and never saw any of the series.
  20. INGO Two (Italy) - Max Roach-Clifford Brown Quintet live at Basin Street April 1956 -
  21. Ella Fitzgerald “Day Dreams: The Best of the Duke Ellington Songbook” Verve cd The full (and the expanded) set is of course wonderful, but this is a very nice compilation compiling fine tracks.
  22. Shitt's Creek was repeatedly on point too
  23. Capri #74021-2- Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra "Groove Shop" - rec. 1990 - Engineer: Hank Cicalo
