Saturday, March 28, 2026 David Pastor & Latino Blanco - The cool session David Pastor, trumpet Latino Blanco, baritone saxophone Miquel Álvarez, double bass Miquel Asensio, drums Valencia is a land of musicians. And yesterday at Jimmy's, two of the most charismatic musicians—not just in the UK, but in the world—came together. Although it all started in Africa, it developed in the USA and from there it was better marketed worldwide. Here, if we knew how to promote it half as well as they did, these two would be world jazz stars. I'm talking about baritone saxophonist, composer, producer and educator Francisco "Latino" Blanco and trumpeter and composer David Pastor. Last night at that jazz mecca called Jimmy Glass, they offered us a concert of good old-fashioned jazz, which delighted everyone present. Accompanied by a rhythm section of two musicians also from the area, namely the double bassist Miquel Álvarez and the drummer Miquel Asensio, we were able to witness a tribute to the cool jazz of the east coast, with hints of bop and all the talent of the aforementioned musicians. Themes mainly by Gerry Mulligan, the great reference of Latino where the constant dialogue saxophone - trumpet, each in its moment and perfectly balanced, elevated the music of this genius even more. Needless to say, the rhythm section shone brilliantly, with Álvarez's precision on the double bass and his pleasant scats, as well as the precision and forcefulness, beautiful and well-measured drumming of Asensio. A great night of jazz, which left a very good taste in the mouths of all those present on this night before Palm Sunday, the beginning of a Holy week. Seek beauty and enjoy Easter... Standing for hours in the cold yesterday tired Lucinda and I out, and I retired a bit early and woke up early. Still cold, and QUIET . . . the system is really shining as it warms up. Starting off with: Miles Davis “Freedom Jazz Dance–Bootleg Series Volume Five” Sony Blu-Spec CD2 3 cd set, disc 3 300×261 9.98 KB I find it fascinating to listen to this set and hear the development of the material in the studio by the Quintet. Sound is excellent as well.

I don't have all of Zoot's output on Pablo (missing the Ellington and Lady Day albums + the Harry Edison collab and probably some others), but his playing, as always, was very consistent for the label. That said, my own (entirely subjective) ranking would go something like this: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12.

Scullers in Boston is having difficulty getting asses in seats and has had to cancel a few shows due to lack of sales. It's not looking good for future shows either. For instance, I saw Steve Davis' We See band show up on the schedule and bought tickets in an instant. With this band: Steve Davis – trombone, Eddie Henderson – trumpet, Ralph Moore – tenor sax, George Cables – piano, Essiet Essiet – bass & Lewis Nash – drums; it was a "no brainer". It looks like about 36 tickets have sold for the 7:00 show & about 14 tickets to the 9:00 show: https://www.ticketweb.com/event/steve-davis-and-the-we-scullers-jazz-club-tickets/14172394. If that stays the same, that show is likely going to be cancelled too. Kinda bums me out.

A bit early for April fools day ...... but intriguing idea.

Paul Gonsalves Quartet “Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick” Monkey Dog cd followed by “Keith & Donna” Round Records LP Keith and Donna Godchaux, 1975, with Jerry Garcia on board. Reminds me of “Cats Under the Stars.”

This covers the team's NHL years, and ignores (what I think is much more interesting) their time in the WHA.

Leonor Gonzalez – Cantos De Mi Tierra Y De Mi Raza This really is a superb record and it is weird that it is so rarely mentioned.
