  1. Past hour
  2. I know some on the Board are not big fans of O.P., but I enjoy his playing and always liked this trio. Like Lon, I've ordered every Mosaic for a long time (even the Pharaoh Sanders, though that took some thinking), and I also don't have all these, so I'm looking forward to it.
  3. I'm not sure how Mosaic is listing these, not no, more than three have appeared on cd. And yes, Weiss is a co-producer.
  4. A bit off-track but Harry Babasin has a song called "Evening In Azerbaijan." It took quite a while to track down (EmArcy MG-36123), but it does exist and I have a copy. I simply can't remember off the top of my head if it borrows heavily from Night in Tunisia or maybe just takes the chords, or indeed if it is a completely different tune. I'll try to listen again tonight.
  5. I'm thankful for the Noah Howard and Clifford Thornton Ezz-thetic releases, which each contain two full albums (the Thornton has the BYG Arthur Jones on it), and have the Horace Silver, which seems to be the best version of that material. But so many of those Ezz-thetic sets are botched by having cuts missing from the albums they include, which is a sure fire sign of not understanding a serious jazz consumer. I thought we had escaped that after the early days of CD's with all of those botched Impulse and Argo releases.
  6. So from a quick reading of the discography only 3 of these have been previously release as CDs? And is this David Weiss the trumpeter who's the producer?
  7. Today
  8. Thigpen's drums and Brown's bass are really nice and clear on the samples. Looking forward to this. Curious that they are only putting out 2500 of these. I guess they don't see much of a market?
  9. Well, if Mosaic does not include or at least mention that track in its box it is quite likely there is no such thing (on its own) as an "Abyssinia" tune. So what was that tune? You got me curious, so I'd like to know too.

  11. Damn this is good!!! I've listened to so many people cover Monk, I forgot what it was like to listen to Monk....
  12. I would love to get those remastered. I have a box of those but from what I remember it wasn't memorable... (I might have to take them out for another spin though...)
  13. Downtown Music Gallery has a reissue LP of People In Sorrow by PlayItLoud Records or something like that. Maybe a dumb question but does anyone know if this is a good reproduction? I never got this LP but hate to pay $27 for something that sounds poor.
  14. Ditto. I'll likely do the same but have to discern what I already have first. Completely agree... Do you have the box with Peterson and Lionel Hampton?? This one? I love it... https://www.discogs.com/release/2953586-Lionel-Hampton-Oscar-Peterson-The-Complete-Lionel-Hampton-Quartets-And-Quintets-With-Oscar-Peterson-
  15. Steve, I agree that there is virtually no information (that I can find) regarding Night In Abyssinia except on the original Dial LP & The discography I listed. I have the booklet to Spotlite CD 131 & there is no mention there plus nothing in the Mosaic Dial booklet. I'd love to know what the actual track is (sonically) on the 10" LP
  16. John L

    Jimmy Scott

I agree with Gheorghe that, if it was indeed Jimmy Scott singing on that Embraceable You, it must be one of his worst vocal performances on record, if not THE worst. It has always puzzled me for that reason. The voice sounds like Jimmy Scott, but the singing doesn't.
  17. Duke Ellington β€œJazz at the Plaza Volume II” Columbia stereo LP A very well-recoded live event with the band very β€œon” and a great vocal (one medley each) by Jimmy Rushing and Billie Holiday.
