  2. And some prefer smart phone calculators to slide rules....
  3. This is not the "gotcha" you think it is. Fetishizing original (poor) design choices is not the same. The fact will always remain that they chose to put out archival recordings from an era with classic artwork on the covers in a way that made not the slightest nod toward the era of music it was mining. Did Cuscuna ever say why those covers were used? I always presumed that for a label that was barely an afterthought, they said OK, put out these recordings but we aren't paying shit for the rest of it.
  4. Some people prefer Phil Woods to Charlie Parker.
  5. YMMV. I much prefer the Roques CD-era covers.
  6. Today
  7. Wow! It was quite a place back in the Augie days. I see there is a Facebook group dedicated to this era. Good to see Augie and his Mum again in the photos. When I used to go, a young Eric Alexander was the regular sax player and used to come round with a hat for donations! No entry fee, I think. Possibly $10 minimum.
  8. RJL-2551 ~52 (Japan 1982) - Sonny Rollins " After The Bridge" - rec. 1964 -
  9. Marta Sanchez, piano (Spanish), Luke Stewart, bass, Chris Beck, drums. Not the advertised drummer, Russell Carter. Chris was a powerhouse. Also Francesca Cinelli, vocals, David’s partner. French I believe. David made some disparaging comments about his current (big) record label! I thought David was on strong form. I complemented him on his lung power at the interval, he said ‘it takes a lot of work’! Yes indeed.
  10. The Architect of Desire: Beauty and Danger in the Sanford White Family by Suzannah Lessard. I studied Composition, Orchestration and Tonal Counterpoint with the author's father, who was a renowned US composer, and wrote some great works in the Neo-Classical style, but then switched to Serial music by the time I studied with him. He was accused of coming in to five of his six daughters' bedrooms in the middle of the night, and doing some naughty things with their bodies when he was drunk. He claimed he didn't remember doing it. He's given the pseudonym of Frank Rousseau in the book, but here was his real name https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lessard I asked him what he thought of jazz. He said "I don't; I don't think of jazz". Now I can say the same of Serial music.

  13. Japan has used the original LT covers when reissuing those records. Yet another point for Japan.
  14. I agree that record is excellent. Not sure I’d put it on having a romantic diner with my wife though…
  15. From the bin from my local thiftstore. Few tracks into this ... Rhymin' On The Funk = my kind of hip-hop
  16. While there are a number of Patrick Roques BN covers that I do like — Mothership isn’t one of them I’m afraid. Don’t really care for the use multiple colors in the lettering in Larry’s name and the album name — nor the filled-in color in the ‘o’ letters in “Young” and “Mother”. And the colors in general aren’t a pallet that feels as much like a classic BN cover as some. That said… I do like that “Mothership” is all concatenated together as if it’s just one word. I guess (I know) it was always two words originally (at least on the LT series LP) — but simply as a matter of (my) personal preference, I’ve always called the album Mothership, and not Mother Ship.
  17. Indeed!
  18. For those who don't know his owrk, here's the video of his farewell concert at the FRankfurt music university, where he had been teaching for eleven years.
  19. I really liked his voice when he read the stories submitted to NPR's National Story Project.
