  2. A small side note about the appreciation of the partners of Richard Rodgers: I'm reading "Eddie Condon's Treasury of Jazz " right now (in small instalments), and in the chapter on Lee Wiley (written by George Frazier) there is this: "To hear Lee at her best, listen to her Storyville LP - the portfolio of Rodgers and Hart. Not Rodgers and that other fellow (who would be Oscar Hammerstein II, who, no disrespect intended, no Larry Hart, he) ..." I suppose the experts' opinions do differ on the respective merits of Rodgers' partners?

  5. Pretty sure I saw him once or twice with Richard Thompson. He had a VERY distinctive sound. Always enjoyed his presence on an album. Pentangle WAS a unique band. Pentangle 2.0 (they didn't call themselves "2.0") was really good, too. They released about 6 albums in the 80s-90s. A little bit electric, but not in a bad way. And not intrusive.
  6. September 29 Jean-Luc Ponty - 1942 Saw Jean-Luc Ponty (v) with William Lecomte (keyb), Guy Akwa Nsangué (b), Thierry Arpino (dr), and Moustapha Cissé (perc) in Göttingen November 6, 2004
  7. Here is the additional vinyl on Columbia with the rest (5 more tracks):
  8. On the: The Thousand Threads, a Neneh Cherry's Book, there is this information:

... By 1954, and still in high school, Don had earned a union card and was playing professionally. Often, he would compete in talent shows around the neighbourhood with people like Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson. Don said that Johnny, slicker than the rest, always won. With Billy, George Newman and Pee Wee Williams, they formed a group called the Jazz Messiahs, playing bebop and jazz in clubs around town. Together they played R&B clubs, going as far north as Vancouver. ..

My question is: Is Pee Wee Williams a bass player?

    Does anyone know him?

The Ticats showed nothing. However, the Argos' loss clinched second place for Hamilton. https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/27/recap-winnipeg-40-hamilton-3/ https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/27/zach-collaros-cooks-up-ticats-in-return-for-bombers/ https://www.tsn.ca/wires/cp/article/blue-bombers-tame-tiger-cats-to-move-into-third-in-west/ https://3downnation.com/2025/09/27/hamilton-tiger-cats-fail-to-get-off-the-plane-in-winnipeg-fly-home-embarrassed-seven-other-thoughts/ https://3downnation.com/2025/09/27/winnipeg-blue-bombers-erupt-offensively-crush-hamilton-tiger-cats-13-other-thoughts/ https://cflnewshub.com/cfl-news/cfl-scores-today-winnipeg-blue-bombers-40-hamilton-tiger-cats-3-collaros-returns-in-dominant-fashion/ https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/27/3-stats-that-defined-winnipegs-week-17-win-over-hamilton/ https://3downnation.com/2025/09/27/official-hamilton-tiger-cats-clinch-cfl-playoff-spot/ ***** Edmonton 27....Sask 25 Terrific game till the very end! The Elks' starters on defense are hurt, but the back-ups seem to be doing a better job. https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/27/recap-edmonton-27-saskatchewan-25/ https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/27/back-and-forth-ends-in-victory-for-elks-over-roughriders/ https://www.tsn.ca/wires/cp/article/emotional-elks-keep-playoff-hopes-alive-with-win-over-roughriders/ https://3downnation.com/2025/09/28/edmonton-elks-hang-on-to-beat-roughriders-win-one-for-larry-six-other-thoughts/ https://3downnation.com/2025/09/28/saskatchewan-roughriders-miss-huge-opportunity-in-loss-to-edmonton-eight-other-thoughts/ https://pifflespodcast.com/blog/slow-start-12-missed-points-defensive-breakdowns-cost-riders-against-edmonton/ https://pifflespodcast.com/blog/riderville-roundup-september-28-2025/ https://cflnewshub.com/cfl-news/cfl-scores-today-edmonton-elks-27-saskatchewan-roughriders-25-elks-edge-riders-in-wild-fourth-quarter-battle/ https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/27/3-stats-that-defined-edmontons-week-17-win-over-saskatchewan/ ***** ***** The Redblacks have sent Lorenzo Mauldin to the Stampeders for a fourth round pick. https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/28/stamps-acquire-lorenzo-mauldin-iv-in-trade-with-redblacks/ https://www.tsn.ca/cfl/article/stampeders-acquire-dl-mauldin-from-redblacks/ https://3downnation.com/2025/09/28/calgary-stampeders-acquire-dl-lorenzo-mauldin-iv-via-trade-from-ottawa-redblacks/ ***** ***** ***** All three of last week's seven-win teams won their eighth game, so it looks like the playoff teams are set. However, it's very possible that the Elks could win two of their last three, so we will see. Both the Argos and the Redblacks would have to win all of their remaining games to avoid the eleventh loss. *****
  10. Colm Toibin: Brooklyn
  11. yes, I've heard the UK to US line seems to be open as of late.
  12. Yesterday
  13. I finished Kundera's Ignorance, which I didn't really care for. I'm in the middle of a few books: Russo's Empire Falls (quite entertaining), Canetti's Auto-da-FĂ© (a bit pretentious but overall ok) and Buzzati's The Singularity (NYRB), which seems promising though I haven't gotten to the SF core of the novel yet.
  14. Excellent choices! Maybe my favorite Hank Mobley!
  15. RIP
  16. Not a "good" week for piano players. R.I.P.
  17. Yes, he did, I've bought quite a few albums with him in recent years, often because of him, and many were excellent... RIP
  18. Sorry to hear this. He did good work. RIP
  19. Slight price reduction. Last day to get a great deal on an excellent Mosaic box set. Thanks. The Blue Note Stanley Turrentine Quintet/Sextet Studio Sessions 5 CD, Mosaic, 2002 Limited Edition of 5000 numbered copies (this is copy # 3065). Everything is in excellent condition - outer box, CDs, jewel cases, large booklet. There is just some very minor rubbing to about a 1/4" piece of the mid left side edge of the front cover paste-on photo. I had not even noticed that until now but wanted to mention any minor issue at all. It is a nice copy. $69 (+ $10 media mail shipping). U.S. shipping only. Payment by pay pal friends/family. I will pack this carefully (wrapped in bubble wrap), ship it in a sturdy box, and provide a postal tracking # after shipping.
  20. Me too. Had not played this in maybe ten years, Rather simple blues riff tunes among the originals, but the feel and groove was much more lively than I remembered. And Wes always delivered fine solos.
