  4. I agree. Not only Texas insects, but also Texas arachnids - finding a scorpion inside your shoe is unforgettable.
  5. Listening to first cut on Amazon Prime. At least that cut (Pepi's Tempo) is heavily in the Miles Agharta/Pangea mode. I might spring $7.74 for the download, won't be paying $35-40 for the vinyl.
  6. I would not discount the formative impact of Texas insects. Especially skeeters.
  7. I last saw her in September of 2024. She had Lonnie Plaxico on bass, Herlin Riley on drums, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, and the second guitarist may have been Kevin Breit. I don't recall the keyboard player. It was an excellent concert. Her voice may not be quite as rich as when she was young, but she still sang beautifully.
  8. Waiting for opinions on the book from those who have a copy, or that have ordered one and hopefully should arrive soon.
  9. OK, I was thinking of L.A. but it was London. Unknown to me, great choice.
  10. Indeed #2 is very contemporary, but no Lester St Louis or Tomeka. Can confirm it's on International Anthem. Nice call. No Sakata or Shabaka on 3 and 9.
  11. Not my kind of Jazz but no matter... the audio sucks. The reverb makes it sound like they're all playing in a giant warehouse. Not for me at all.

  14. So has anyone heard Cassandra Wilson lately now that she is touring again (whenever she can step away from the keyboard)? I saw her ages and ages ago. I think it actually was in Carnegie Hall (which often isn't ideal for singers in small groups). Anyway, she is coming to Toronto in late June. Apparently this series of concerts is to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of New Moon Rising, and several of the musicians on that recording will be with her including Lonnie Plaxico. I'm leaning towards going, focusing on the music and not her non-musical past times. But it would be helpful if someone can report on how she sounds. Thanks!
  15. Terry Allen: Gimme A Ride To Heaven Boy
  16. well....I downloaded a sample on Kindle, maybe 40-50 pages worth and I think it's pretty awful. The intro is a waste of time, and the first section makes the same mistake every author, unedited, seems to be making these days. The writer has mistaken research for writing, and it is so overloaded with detail about - well, everything, Texas insects, the family history (could have been cut to about 3 pages), land deals, political battles - everything but Kenny Dorham himself. And written in a totally dead style, like a listings section of a newspaper. Sorry, this is probably not a popular opinion, but this weirdness is everywhere in current jazz bios and music bios in general. The writer(s) seems to thing that merely describing something is the same as having insight into it. I just am so tired of how badly music bios are done - unless they are by Robin DG Kelley of John Szwed. I gave up on this one (and I haven't even described one particular howler of mistake, which may be an editing mistake, but that just shows there was probably no editor).
