  2. That's a pretty good assessment. Counterpoint is a reason I like Hindemith. A regular on a classical forum I visit is a big Hindemith enthusiast and raves about his opera Cardillac. I recall not digging the Mathis der Maler (his famous opera) excerpts I heard, so never pursued Cardillac.
  3. An underrated album, I think. The sound and production ares flawless, thanks to Gary McFarland's impeccable taste and knowledge, the sidemen are first choice. Tjader plays even the blandest pop tunes with his great melodic taste and feeling. Can be used for easy listening but serious attention reveals many tasteful details. https://www.discogs.com/release/3063573-Cal-Tjader-Solar-Heat
  4. I don't really enjoy the live albums that much, but do like the studio material a lot. But I'll wait a long time to see if there's a nicely-priced copy of this small set in the future.

  6. It’s funny… I always genuinely love listening to Hindemith — yet I can’t cite very many specific works of his that I specifically love. I’ve got a ton of his stuff too, nearly all on CPO (20 years ago I found all three of those unified orchestral CPO mini-box-sets for 50% off list price, brand new and sealed). Just counted, I’ve got a total 26 discs of Hindemith — and the only composers I have more of, are Ives and Henze… and then also Grieg (my wife’s favorite composer). But, strangely, I don’t have more than a handful of specific works by Hindemith that are ‘favorites’. More so, I have specific CD’s of his that overall have a several works that happen to have the same timbres — and degrees of contrapuntal-ism — that I always remember really suit my fancy. Perhaps his ‘dry’ reputation plays into this. If I was giving numeric scores, it’s like ALL of it is a 7/10 minimum — but practically none of it is over 8/10 either. It’s all consistently VERY good, but little of it is quite ‘great’ (but oh so very close).
  7. Hey, it's a lot better than that! Very inventive music, actually. And she was able to tame Jaco, which was no small feat All told, it's my favorite period of hers. I just don't have a need to go back to it in a big ass set like this one.
  8. Please hold off on finalizing this. I think a new person may be on the verge of volunteering for September.
  9. Thanks! The Juilliard set (made by a post-Mann group);gets a strong review, as did the Amar quartet, which seems to emphasize slower than usual tempos that highlight color and texture. I like edge but I also like color. So I'm gonna marinate this for a while. Any further input from our community is certainly welcome!
  10. LOL! Much truth there re: Joni & "jazz".
  11. Today - July 16 - Cal Tjader would have turned 100! Let's celebrate the Cal Tjader Centennial and spin some of his music!
  12. Whoa! Jim, there's a Juilliard set on Wergo (?!) I didn't even know about that one...seems to be available for not much more than the Naxos/Amar. Here are a couple of review links fwiw: https://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2017/Apr/Hindemith_quartets_8503290.htm# HINDEMITH Complete String Quartets - WERGO WER69602 [SG] Classical Music Reviews: August 2017 - MusicWeb-International
  13. I’m very sorry to hear this news about Victor. He was a true gentleman. RIP.

  15. Any chance you're willing to take September?
  16. Because terms like broadcast tv, streaming and cable tv refer to the method of signal propagation, in other words OTA, internet, or using some sort of land cable. Not which channels are carried. Broadcast tv = OTA. I can see why you are thinking like that. When we were younger broadcast and cable were each synonymous with a set of channels. Network tv was broadcast and CNN, etc were cable. But now I receive channels that I used to think of as cable - but via OTA! I live in a rural part of Oregon. OTA tv signals are available here from a number of mountain top broadcast stations but they are all fairly far away, so my signal can be weak or intermittent. Lots of mountains here and line of sight often won't work - usually has to be a bounce. I use a signal amplifier, which is a small, inexpensive gadget that goes in between the antenna (a paper-thin sheet about a foot square) and the tv (or pc). Numerous good signals from several directions.
  17. Did not watch much of the All-Star Game, which is normally the case these days. Not a bad game, though, with the American League fighting and coming back as they did. Too bad it was ruined by the silliness of the "swing off." A home run derby to decide a game--really? Kyle Schwarber as MVP--really? This was not an award for playing baseball. It was for "lob me the ball and I'll hit it a mile."
  18. Just compared the two versions. totally different. And the Parker/Coleman would have been untypical with short solos for bass, alto sax, and piano. The phrasing of the vocal solo sounds like a Moody solo, for sure. The search conrinues .....
  19. Dave Holland Octet “Pathways” Dare2 cd 500×446 9.9 KB I love these Holland groups with Eubanks and Nelson.
  20. "Greek Variations" needs urgently a proper reissue by DECCA. Ardley,Neil / Carr,Ian /Rendell,Don -Greek Variations Original 1970 Vinyl Record | eBay
  21. I like these quartets (and Hindemith, despite his "dry" reputation). Have owned the Danish Q set on cpo for a long time and never felt a need to consider alternatives. As far as I can recall it was viewed favorably on classical forums, but I'm a little out of touch and don't know if other sets have been released recently.
  22. Me too, but it soon stopped functioning.
  23. Can you please link your source for this great information? Thanks in advance.
