  2. I passed on the last time Herbie came through town, but I am leaning toward going this time. It's possible I've already sat too long on ordering tickets. Anyway, any feedback on his current touring group and repertoire and whether he still breaks out the "keytar" would be appreciated.
  3. Thanks for the heads-up! I'm in for the Brooklyn Academy and especially the 1985 Montreux (magic happened there on a regular basis) CD's. Hesitant on the CD with Monty Alexander, seems like both pianists would have to compromise their styles to possibly mesh.
  4. (There's a big band show every Tuesday night at a local jazz club here in Montreal: they started the second set with the Gil Evans arrangement of "St. Louis Blues", then played a few from "The Indivudualism of G.E." - "Las Vegas Tango" and "Spoonful". Sounded great)

  8. Neil Charles Trio (Mark Sanders & Cleveland Watkiss) playing Cafe Oto tonight- would love to be there but on the other side of the world (Australia). Their recent Jazz In Britain quartet release "Dark Days" (James Baldwin tribute) is one of my fav releases from last year Check the link - it looks like it's going to be streamed https://www.cafeoto.co.uk/events/neil-charles-dark-days-2026-2/

  11. The cold is back and settled in. 12 degrees! About 2 inches of snow yesterday. Should just make it above freezing today. Ah well. It’s March in NE Ohio. Starting off with Charles Mingus" The Clown" Analogue Productions SACD. “All those greens, all those yelllows, all those oranges. . . they weren’t quite as bright as they used to be.” I can relate! Followed by this great sounding disc. Stanley Turrentine with The 3 Sounds “Blue Hour” Blue Note Japan 24 Bit by RVG lp facsimile cd
  12. thanks for posting!
  13. Thankfully also released on CD CD Archives - IN+OUT Records GmbH
  14. He has a second album, but I think that's about it. Also very good! But otherwise he's a role player for other musicians. I can see that he would be happy to be recognized.

  16. I just found out about the death of Sheila Cooper, a singer/alto sax player I used to play with in a band in Brooklyn, back in the mid 80s. I was shocked to hear of her passing, and I thought I'd look her up here to find out about it, but her name didn't come up in a search I did. She was born in Ottawa, Canada in 1960, and became part of the Toronto jazz scene before moving to NYC where I met her. She was a talented, intelligent, beautiful young woman, and used to have a lot of great stories about Ed Bickert. She married the great tenor sax player Andy Middleton, and I remember hearing somewhere that they moved to Berlin. She passed in 2021 in Vienna, Austria. Here's an example of her alto playing and singing with the great Polish pianist, Fritz Pauer:

  18. I've been supplementing my Wadada Leo Smith deep dive by mixing in a similar deep dive of Art Farmer. The latter is proving to be a guy whose playing I really enjoy, but I'm not so keen on most of his musical settings (my sweet spot is on the slightly freer end of things). Regardless, I'm pretty sure I never need to hear this one again.
  19. That's a good one for sure. I happened to see Lyle Lovett in Corpus Christi back in 2005, and Viktor was playing bass for him. He signed that cd booklet for me, and seemed happy to be recognized for his own music, not just being Lyle's bass player (though he did a fine job with that as well).
  20. I know that he is constantly working, so maybe he is too busy to worry about it. I am hoping to do a duo album with him at some point.
