from Session Notes, p 683 (Coltrane Reference) Private recording by Alan Sukoenig, who recorded with a portable tape recorder at the club; the tapes are currently in the collection of the Institute of Jazz Studies (IJS), Rutgers, New Jersey. These mono audio recordings are of listenable audio quality; they feature powerful Coltrane solos (particularly his cadenza on "I Want To Talk About You") and deserve to be released through official channels. -
As expected (try opening in incognito window to avoid paywall): https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-26/japan-suspends-some-parcel-deliveries-to-us-due-to-trump-tariffs Takeaways by Bloomberg AI Japan Post Co. will suspend shipping of some small packages to the United States due to fresh tariffs imposed by the US government. The mail service will stop accepting parcels that include consumer goods for sale or gifts worth over $100 from Wednesday, after the US revoked its tariff exemption on lower-value packages. Japan Post's decision falls in line with other national postal services that have temporarily suspended their shipping services to the US, including Britain and Australia.

This certainly went into a different direction. I would think most of are hearing Trane on piano for the first time. Given the audience noise, they must have assumed he was no Tyner--and that is true. -

according to The Coltrane Reference (p683), JC played unaccompanied piano during the intermission - there's a lot of talking in the background of the recording but the piano is very audible - it's a fascinating listen -

Lord has this entry: John Coltrane (p) solo Live "The Showboat", Philadelphia, PA, June 10, 1963 After the rain RLR Records (Sp)RLR88657 [CD] Coltrane on piano?!?!? https://www.discogs.com/release/5076049-John-Coltrane-Trio-Quartet-More-Live-At-The-Showboat-1963 "McCoy Tyner was late that day, and so Trane played the first three tunes and most of the fourth in the unusual trio format of tenor sax/bass/drums! CD also has the only existing testimony of Trane at the piano!" -
I received my box set on Friday and had a chance to listen to the first 2 CDs yesterday. I was familiar with the music from those CDs due to having those albums on vinyl and I can say that the sound quality on this Mosaic box set is very analogue-like. It is one of the best sounding Mosaics I have heard. And, as others have already stated, the booklet essay by Mark Stryker, is outstanding. Very well done. Just an overall great box set. Kudos to Mosaic for doing this!

I've assumed this is going to KO cdjapan as a personal buying option. Probably why they've been offering a lot of coupons the past couple of months. If collection issues ever get solved, there'll be a price increase of more or less the tariff rate. That could be manageable, but I don't think the collection thing will get worked out any time soon. Merchants like Dusty Groove could also get hammered. It's conceivable that they've been importing in de minimis (< $800) increments, which would put them in the same boat... So I fear the import CD/LP market is going to dry up for a while.

Sounds good. 👍 Yeah, it's a shame that those albums were never issued on CD. The music certainly deserves much wider recognition.
