70 degrees. . . and the second tunderstorm of the morning. Supposedly it will be a nice day. . . eventually. Starting off the day with Grateful Dead “Dave’s Picks Vol. 14” disc 1. This is the final US concert before they shipped off for that Eupropean tour in 1972. Paue4qw released additional and alternate material on one of rhe volumes on Mysthic Sound. Great photo of Duke and Bud there as well.

Oh, just found this now - Discogs has a separate entry that explains the note that this 2025 CD was mastered in 2015: https://www.discogs.com/release/21709789-Pony-Poindexter-Live-At-The-Domicile Looks like a promo release if that's indeed the cover.

Chicago is my favorite scene, I've been following 30 years ago, I've even been there. Playing with that energy (NRG) could only be Mars Williams and I went straight to that archive record.

I think he does @mikeweil - you'll get mail shortly so you can update responsibly.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

Last Tuesday, the night before I left for Knoxville, I saw Johnny Marr at the Great American Music Hall club in SF. I've seen him a number of times and he never disappoints. This one was no exception. -
I was there. Very interesting presentation. The fact that Roscoe basically played solo for an entire hour (mostly on Bass Sax!) was astounding - especially at his age. And it seemed like Tyshawn was very unsure about how to contribute. He played very little. I saw 22 performances. Highlights were: William Hooker Quartet Masada I w/Zorn, Dave Douglas, Greg Cohen, Joey Baron Roscoe & Tyshawn Marc Ribot/Mary Halvorson "Secret Show", Friday night at the Postmodern Sound Exchange Halvorson: Canis Major Electrical Field of Love: Harriett Tubman + Georgia Anne Muldrow Patricia Brennan Septet (Adam O'Farrill, Marcus Gilmore, Mauricio Herrera, Jon Irabagon, Mark Shim, Kim Cass) - lots of energy and the crowd that night was electric! Gary Lucas & Gods and Monsters: w/Calvin Weston and Ernie Brooks Dave Douglas GIFTS Quintet: w/Tomeka Reid, James Brandon Lewis, Rafiq Bhatia, Ian Chang

Yes the stuff with Tony Bevan & John Edwards is great, IMO saw the film a few years back. Loved it.

I knew the Chicago connection made it only a matter of time. Good sleuthing. I only recently came across Mars' work and have been blown away. Thankful for labels like Corbett vs Dempsey that helped get his work out there. I'm finally able to listen to the above video of the original and you're 100% correct. I can't help but think he wanted to re-record that tune, and I'm glad he did.

That´s a nice record. Thats a superb record. Bud in very great form, a very swift version of "How High The Moon". And maybe the only commercial record of Bud, where he plays "Jordu". He played it very often at Birdland in 1964 even better than this anyway superb performance. Reets and I was rarely performed, and usually at a slower tempo. And I think it´s the only recording of "Satin Doll" by Bud. The superb photo of Bud that you posted is from the great recording session he did for Roulette with a stellar rhythm section of J.C. Moses who was a very fine drummer, and the great John Ore, who had played a lot with Monk. Bravo, good choice ! both among Bud´s best things ! This is a thing I got from my late wife once. Have not listened to it since and had forgotten about it. It is wonderful. I had not looked at the personnel but when I heard the piano solo on "There is no Greater Love" I knew it MUST be Walter Davis.
