  2. never imagined to see a pic where someone else than Dex looks juiced πŸ˜‚
  3. One of my favourite Jackie McLeans. Maybe even the first I ever heard when I was in my early teens. So strong. I never liked "easy listening music", always was a quite serious and thinking kid, and did not "buy" stuff that was "just fun"....πŸ˜‚
  4. This is one of the best of Birds later recordings ! Now listening: June Tyson ! I love her voice, I love the lyrics and Sun Ra was one of my favourites from the very beginning, when I started to listen to afro american music ! Sun Ra, Ornette, late Trane, Pharoah Sanders, electric Miles, and ....Mingus.....those where my favourites in my early teens. I saw the Arkestra with June Tyson of course and was deeply moved by her angelic voice, the "Space Songs and Chants", wonderful. And as a generation thing: Sure I got acquainted first to the kind of music that was played then in the early 70Β΄s, and it was the Arkestra, where I first heard some old jazz too, those Fletcher Henderson things. I had never heard about that before and loved it, I believed itΒ΄s a special "Space Jump", had no idea that this was the jazz of earlier decades of the century.... Same with Mingus....heard the pianists do some stride sections at one point and heard that kind of old thing for the first time.

    Benny Carter

The Complete 1930-1940 Recordings Recommended! There's a single disc out on JSP (1933-1934) that's also good.
  6. One more - Joe Romano - he played alto and tenor.
  7. Today
  8. Disc 1 Somewhat disappointing. Art Pepper play ok, though not with much passion. The rhythm section is recessed a bit in the background, and their playing is on the dull side./ I am unlikely to listen to the other 3 discs in this set. There are numerous other Art Pepper recordingsI would prefer to hear.
  9. Mendelssohn - String Quartets Op.13 & Op.44/1 - Guarneri Quartet
  10. Listening to this album mentioned here on page 1: Quite interesting quartet (live) album, with trumpet as the sole horn.
  11. πŸ’— EmArCy / Mercury MG-36108 (Japan 195J-40M) - Max Roach "Jazz In 3/4 Time" - rec. 1957 -
  12. My assumption is these fell off of copy write.

  17. Agreed, their earlier singles up through 1967 still sound garage and great, though some of the later stuff moves away from that (though some of it is quite good for what it is). They did have a fair amount of poor filler on their albums, but a lot of good stuff there also. And agreed on both their worthiness for the R&R HOF and that it is a joke. Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Cyndi Lauper, and all those Rap/Hip-Hop acts, etc. may be many things, but they are not R&R.
  18. Watched Blackboard Jungle last night. Haven't seen it since it was first released in 1955. Of course I remembered Rock around the Clock but I didn't remember that Stan Kenton and Bix Beiderbecke were also featured. And in the scene where the kids destroy a record collection they yell out the names of several of my favorites as they break them "Cherokee", "Clap Hands Here Come Charlie" etc. Of course I was 12 when I first saw it and none of the jazz references would have meant much to me.
  19. Strong set last night at The Stone Aruan Ortiz on grand piano Hery Paz on tenor saxophone & flute Tom Rainey on drums 57-58 minute freely improvised set

    Benny Carter

My favorite I'm aware of is the 'Further Definitions' album on Impulse!, but that may well be a function of the sidemen and my taste, rather than it being artistically superior to his other work.
  21. If you look beyond the Norman Granz Jam Sessions that Benny Carter participated in, IMO his Verve years, while certainly fine, tend to be rather middle-of-the-roadish, i.e. mainstreamish on safe ground, and probably not all that distinctive above and beyond what else there was in major-label mainstream recordings of the 50s. And quite a few noteworthy recordings that he put his special touches to were under the leadership of others. Personally I find his early 30s and late 30s and 40s big band recordings as well as his European recordings from the "in-between" 30s period more stimulating to explore as a whole. But of course YMMV.
  22. The 1810 made pianoforte works surprisingly well with the pieces of the Bach sons. https://www.discogs.com/release/15418540-JΓΆrg-Becker-Sonate-Facile
