  3. My first Basie set, purchased in 1992. It was a great introduction! Still have it. Right now:
  4. I can ask Matt about it; he first popped up in New York around 1984. William played with some of those people but irregularly, and I think there was a divide between the places that Zorn and Chadbourne were setting up and the post-loft environment that Parker et al were occupying. Then again, Zorn, Chadbourne, and Polly Bradfield were playing with Frank Lowe and so was William Parker (there's also that trio record with Horvitz, WP, and Butch Morris). Cross-pollination did exist.
  5. Bargiel - String Quartets No.3 and No.4 Stanford - String Quartets Vol.1, No.5 and No.8
  6. Yes! Not to be confused with the Black & Blue album of the same name that was reissued on CD.
  7. Just wanted to say thank you for everything! I really enjoyed those Ellington and Co. discs a lot!!!
  8. What was the view on the relationship between the likes of William Parker and Matthew Shipp and the core Downtown group?
  9. To pick one example - think of Marty Ehrlich and Tim Berne’s relationship with Julius Hemphill (and to a lesser degree Anthony Braxton). Interesting analogue, say, to Gerry Mulligan playing with Ben Webster or Johnny Hodges.
  10. A quick read of this article finds me agreeing about the writing of Stuart Nicholson. But as a long time journalist and broadcaster, I may be unfamiliar with European artists if I'm not on their promotional mailing lists. Of course, there is no time to hear everything sent to me, but I do prioritize listening to CDs vs. downloads or streaming links. I do realize it has gotten too expensive for many artists and labels to justify sending physical product from Europe, although some still do, like Criss Cross Jazz and Livia Records.
  11. Re-visiting this new release from Immanuel Wilkins. Immanuel Wilkins Quartet “Live at the Village Vanguard, Volume 1” Blue Note cd 300×271 5.69 KB Looking forward to another volume!
  12. Bill Evans Trio “Portraits at the Penthouse: Live in Seattle” Resonance cd 1966 with Eddie Gomez and Joe Hunt. Very nice imo.
