  2. Carville: no I did not get a bill. I find it odd that a shipper would contact the buyer after the items have cleared the customs house to attempt to collect a tariff or tax. My understanding is that an item cannot clear the customs house without payment if said payment is required. I think that CDJapan stated somewhere that it calculates and includes an amount for the tariff but I have not see any evidence of that. It does charge a flat 1300 yen fee for customs clearance or handling. One of those last two shipments I mention above was for 7 cds. My last shipment before the tariffs was for 7 cds. Notably, there was only about a 300 yen difference in the respective shipping costs.
  3. Well, yeah, but the groove and feel is kinda stiff and cerebral compared to Walton, Carter, and Higgins.
  4. I always wondered what the story was with this goofy cover. I get that it was before advanced photo editing but still... just plunking a picture of Elvin into it seems strange even then.
  5. Also released as "Minor Mishap" on Black Lion. and "Blues For Alvina" on Editions Atlas:
  6. Today
  7. I've avoided "Brothers 4" because Stitt uses the Varitone throughout. I'm not much of a fan of that sound but I'm starting to try again. I just picked up his other two--fer, "Legends of Acid Jazz" with one half being Varitone. Maybe I'll get more out of it this time around?
  8. Credit is due to this thread. I knew of him, but only now checked out this, his first album.
  9. Welcome Jay. Great story about Harry. On the Radio Discussions forum, Mark Giardina posted this funny story: A funny story about Harry I wanted to pass along to everyone. Harry had a bad habit of coming to work late. After being at the station from 4pm and finishing up hosting a talk show (with no producer or call-screener) after 1 am, I was anxious to get home. At first Harry would show up 15 minutes late, then it started to be a half-hour. Finally I told Harry the next time he wasn't in the studio after the news at 1:05 am I would stop playing his opening theme and a several jazz selections and play whatever I wanted. Apparently he thought I was kidding; I wasn't. So the next night when 1:05 am came around and the news was over I put a Hank Williams Senior album on the turntable (this is decades before computers) and let it play. The next night it was a John Wayne record. Needless to say Harry was fuming mad and swearing like hell as I heard him come running down the hallway from the back door at 350 East Avenue into the studio. ( I was in the newsroom at the time). The next day I'm told to report to the GM's office and was asked what's going on? "Harry is very upset with you". After I explained the situation to the GM I just came out and said if Harry continues to be late for work, I will personally buy a Mrs. Miller's greatest hits album and play the damn thing in its entirety every night he's late. Word must have got back to Harry because he was never late again. ;D
  10. This seems to be that two-fer comp… https://www.discogs.com/release/14722696-Sonny-Stitt-Don-Patterson-Brothers-4 Have to confess that I’ve never explored any of Stitt with organ before — and was only vaguely aware Grant Green had done any sideman work as late as 1969.
  11. Still editing and playing stuff I haven't heard in awhile. (lols, I should edit me!)
  12. Thanks for steering my attention to this album, Mike! Didn“t know this artist, yet. Fascinating piano recital, Onaje Allan Gumbs is a highly interesting stylist, that“s for sure!
  13. Starting/continuing editing the paper from no reproach, but keep finding great company in music:
  14. A cold rainy morning. Finally got pain management for Lucy handled and she’s back to sleep. Should be able to get a listen to a disc in! Starting off with Bob Dylan ā€œThrough the Open Windowā€ disc 4 for the second time.
  15. Enjoying the McLean Connoisseur days. Scooped 'em all up.
  16. I have a CD that combines everything from 9/15/69 - 2 LPs plus one stray track IIRC. I bought it mostly because Grant Green's on it, but I enjoy everyone's playing.
  17. I pick up a few Black Jazz titles every time they have one of those sales. Grabbed the Gene Russell albums this time.
  18. Have and love this set for over 40 years! Now playing:
  19. Great to see him still playing Kevin I saw Gary Bartz last night in Rotterdam. Though some of the songs were a bit to smooth to my tastes and I didn’t enjoy the female singer, I am happy I managed to see him.
  20. Balls on the B side probably šŸ˜†
  21. But i like to play da songs, and the songs have changes. Should I just forget about playing and just learn to dance? I could do The Jerk pretty good when I was a wittle boy.
  22. Sean Jones Quartet, Improvise, Never Before Seen
  23. Oregon/Elvin Jones, Together (Vanguard) The Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert volume 2 (Atlantic)
  24. I find Phil Woods' version of the tune to be quite a gasser: Regarding "Hopscotch," it looks like there are a few other more recent covers of the tune, but I'm not aware of Chambers recording it on his own.
