Rain! A very unhappy dog on my lap. Starting off with another Savoy/Denon cd, “A Pair of Pianos” – John Mehegan and Eddie Costa with Clyde Lombardi on bass. Very nice early morning material.

Of course I am not one of the lucky ones who owns Dial LP 217, but at any rate this is very odd indeed. That title would have been remembered if more widely known. For the record (literally ), "Night In Abyssinia" with matrix no. D1130-A is not listed in the JEPSEN discography, neither is it listed in BRUYNINCKX (neither in the printed edition nor in the updated pdf version). So its discogrpahical non-existence goes back a long way. But since it was on that 50s LP it cannot be a "late discovery" if it is listed on the jazzdisco site now. I wonder where the jazzdisco fellers got that matrix number from? If it wasn't just some clever guesswork this info must have come from somewhere (Not LP 217, so ...?). Amazing nobody ever has come across this track before to reissue it, neither the people at Spotlite (usually very thorough, aren't they?) nor the Jazz Club Basel that compiled the thoughtfully programmed gap-filling "McGhee Special" LP (JCB-20) in 1981. I just re-read the liner notes on Spotlite SPJ131 (written by Ross Russell, none less), and it is stated specifically that NINE tunes were recorded at that session on 3 December 1947. A total that does not leave room for something called "Night In Abyssinia". Somehow this "Abyssinia" sounds almost like some mistitling à la Crown Records. P.S.: According to Discogs, that "Abyssinia" track is not even on Spotlite SPJ-CD131 (which is an expanded version of LP SPJ131 and is supposed to feature the "Complete" Dial sessions, including many alternates). I wonder if the booklet to this CD mentions anything about "Night In Abyssinia" (mistitling of an alternate? Which alternate?). If there's any place where something about this track ought to have been written (if it existed as a separate entity) it is there (or on its U.S. CD clone on the Jazz Classics label).

I've just noticed an anomaly regarding Dial 10" LP 217 "Night Music" pertaining to the track Night In Abyssinia (D1130-A) - it's listed in the Jazz Discography (see below) but not in Lord. Is it a version of A Night in Tunisia? There is no track by that name listed in Lord also when a search is performed. The LP is listed as Various Artists but it's primarily Howard McGhee's material. The track is listed as a McGhee/Edwards composition on the original LP label plus it does exist on the LP (I've seen an image of the 4 tracks on side 2 of the LP, coinciding with the 4 label titles). I have a list of all (I presume) the Dial (78/10") releases & D1130-A is not there. Maybe it's an alternate of another track but given this new title which did occur with certain Dial alternates. https://www.78discography.com/Dial.htm This track is not listed or present on any of my Dial releases (LPs & CDs, including the Dial Mosaic) Can anyone shed more light on this? Someone could listen to the track on the original 10" (if anyone has it). Bebop street alto. I'm a fan.

Nice player - to my ears part of a small group of uniquely expressive "plaintive-cry" altos stemming from Bird, including Rudy Williams, Ernie Henry, Jackie Mac ...

I was going through some old digital photo albums for my wife's Aura picture frame when I came upon some pictures from a visit to Mosaic Records in 2003. I had totally forgotten that my friend Rob took a picture of me and Michael Cuscuna.

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?

Well, supposing we are talking about the Birdland broadcast of 30 June 1950 (date indicated in the Bruyninckx discography), this discography DOES indicate Little Jimmy Scott on that recording of "Embraceable You" that also featured Bird P. and Fats N. but not Bud P. (but Walter Bishop jr.). "Bird's Diary" by Ken Vail (published in 1996) places this gig that yielded "Embraceable You" with Bird and his cohorts (and Little Jimmy Scott as the vocalist - sic!) at 21 May 1950. And again Walter Bishop jr. on piano. But the "Bird Lore" discography by Koster and Mobach (published in 2002, i.e. more recelty than the most recent Buryninckx) not only gives 15 or 16 May 1950 as the date but also says "probably" the vocalist was "either Chubby Newsome or Little Jimmy Scott". The Discogs page of the "One Night In Birdland" LP on CBS has the following comment: "The track D2 (Embrayceabole You) is wrongly credited to have been sung by Chubby Newsome, but it was Jimmy Scott who actually did it." And here the date again is 15/16 May 1950. So which is which now? The liner notes to the Chubby Newsome LP on Official ("The Original Hip Shakin' Mama"), BTW, do not mention any live appearances of hers with Charlie Parker.

oh yes I knew it must be with Hank or Lee. I dont have mosaic, I have the individual albums, most of them japanese cardboard cover. With Sun RA ? That sounds interesting, because Sun RA is something like almost a God for me and my girlfriend..... but I don´t have so early stuff from him, more the 60s and 70´s

He is a sideman on the early Hank Mobley Sextet BN. I have it as part of the Mosaic Mobley '50s BN set. When I get off work I'll see if he's on any other albums in that Mosaic. In the esoterica department, there are some rehearsal tracks with Jenkins on the Sun Ra - The Eternal Myth Revealed box set on Transparency. Disc 5 iirc. They date back to 1950s Chicago.
