FIve Times Six (Cat Records) yesterday on the King's annual birthday flea market, I didn't even try, but a year ago, I actually managed to find an album from my extended wish list... so playing it again on the occasion (even though commentators pointed out that the King lost quite a bit of weight over the year, so that there's substantially less King to celebrate this year than a year ago...)

  19. Just came back from a Kronos Quartet concert at which they played "Kiss Yo' Ass Goodbye" credited to Sun Ra, Terry Riley and Sara Miyamoto. According to the program notes it "utilizes Sun Ra's Track 'Nuclear War' as source material." It begins to really kick ass when they sample the drumming and chanting from the original.
  20. Quite a strange record indeed. My copy is titled "Bud Powell 1957" . There are some tunes that Bud rarely played. "That Black Old Magic" returned to his set lists one decade later after he had returned to New York, as well as "Though Swell" and "Someone to watch over me". It´s interesting to compare this slightly stride version with the ballad version he did 10 years later on "The Return of Bud Powell", which is my favourite version. I love Pharoah Sanders and have loved his music as early as the 70´s when he put out all those great records for Impulse I think. When I was in my early teens I got his first record "Live at the East". What personnel is on this one ? I think this one is from the same time like "Soul Station" and is another great record. I think Soul Station and this one are my favourite Mobley records.
  21. Andi Steirer "Trance of Noiz" : This is a first class album of Austria´s greatest percussionist Andi Steirer. I am very proud that I got him for my own album "Waltz for Serena". Though he is very very much in demand, I´ll have him also in future on some of our gigs, most possible the larger ones. He is so fantastic and this album is so great. It has also some of Andi´s own compositions like "Hongkong Tavern" "Do Da Doo" as well as stuff with great guitarist Rens Newland , co-compositions between them both, like the title tune "Trance of Noiz". The album also features the wonderful saxophinist Thomas Kugi on soprano and tenor.
  22. This is a favorite of mine and always has been. I've had all the previous single releases of this material and have the 3 CD complete set bootleg of this material now. In fact, I ordered the 3 CD set off Amazon and sent it to Zev when he was looking for more Rollins to release that Sonny might approve of and I suggested this stuff so Sonny could, at the very least, be properly compensated for the release of this material. In the end, I was not involved in this release at all but early on, I was told that they found a few of the original sources of some of the recordings in various radio archives but not all of them. If Bernie Grundman was involved in the mastering, I have no doubt this material is now sounding about as good as it can possibly sound. I've done a few projects with Bernie and enjoyed working with him immensely and thought his work to be pretty impeccable.
