  2. I'm sure we'll mention darn near everyone he worked with eventually, but in addition to those already mentioned I like Kenny Clark and Roy Haynes with Monk. On the other hand, I generally love Billy Higgins but don't think he and Monk were quite on the same wavelength.
  3. Today
  4. I swear that Buddy's playing bari on the out chorus. Please advise, thank you. !
  5. Did they ever gig together live before The Giants Of Jazz?
  6. me to ! this was the best rhythm section. But also Shadow Wilson was a wonderful drummer. I listen first of all to drummers, so I have heard them all. And in Monk´s last active years from 1970-76 his son was a very very good drummer. And a highlight of drumming with Monk was when Philly Joe Jones sat in for an obscure and weak drummer in Paris 1969.

  8. The excellent Back Cover Photography by Jochen Mönch ....
  9. They were all wonderful (although Ben Riley was maybe not always wonderful). But for the working band drummers, I still get a kick out of Frankie Dunlop.
  10. And Is there much consensus around this subject? I’m not deeply steeped in Monk — but from what I have heard, my intuitive sense is that one of the most important keys to the quality of a Monk release is maybe the drummer. And my further intuitive sense is that the drummer may have had some (big?) role in spurring Monk to his best work.
  11. Some of Babs’s material wouldn’t fly today but that is a-ok.
  12. The Father's Day Special is up. https://www.cigarsinternational.com/shop/10-packs-free-20-ci-bucks/2052514/ Same deal as usual, with two exceptions to our detriment. The website has had two policy changes. 1) You can no longer use more than one discount code at a time. 2) The CI Bucks card is no longer treated as a gift card. It is now treated like a discount code. ***** I found another site that might interest you. CigarPage.com. They seem to specialize in naked bundles, like JR did back in the '70s.
  13. This is borderline jazz at most (some boogie-woogie content), but I'm a big Robert Ashley fan so:
  14. "Modern mainstream" big band, the type of record I usually am more than happy to ignore, but this one is consistently engaging. Expert writing, fresh (enough) ideas, and executions that speak to a deep understanding of the writing. Recommended, actually, withe the caveat that no new ground is being broken. None. Rich soil, however, is being cultivated lovingly and responsibly.
  15. Yesterday
  16. Soul, Barbara Simmons with Jackie Mac & Grachan, et al On this album Wm. Blake is set to new music since his music has been lost, sometimes it's sung and sometimes spoken. And I have a cassette recording of me reading my Hank Mobley poem to the accompaniment of my friend Scot Fultz's band Straight No Filter, said poem published in the UK literary journal Fire, all rights reserved by yours truly. as far as I know, it's not on the net. No wonder he got a No Bell Prize!
  17. Sara Lee Little Debbie Big Bad John
  18. Saw Kahil El'Zabar tonight, with Corey Wilkes, Alexander Harding and a cellist I don't know, at the Union Chapel. Thanks go to @mjazzg for pointing it out to me. A good gig. Not quite on the level with past times I have seen him, but still strong. I had the pleasure of taking my dad (80) and aunt (82), both of whom really loved it. Tomorrow taking my wife to see Nat Birchall at Cafe OTO.
  19. I remember reading a story about him in a bio I read a long time ago . Someone happened to be on the same plane he was on while he was on the way to some long flight to a third world country to do a shoot. The person was amazed to see Corman seated in the third class section, surrounded by very bad conditions. His friend said to him, "Roger, what are you doing sitting back here?" He answered, "Just trying to save a buck." If one of his films got finished early, he was famous for immediately filming another entire movie using the same actors, set and crew for a huge discount on all three; even if no one knew they were making two movies back to back!
