Mal was a warm person. I worked with him a couple of times. I'll never forget his set at the Chicago festival with Steve Lacy. I hope Lazaro drops in and speaks of his exchanges with Mal.

I like his recordings too, BUT he's never been "shockingly humble" unless that stance would enhance his reputation. Not a bad stance for a neglected artist.

Concerning Hamp and Getz, never had the Norgran but had a copy of Verve 8128 and it was white. Obviously a 3 color job printed on white paper.

I thought this was a comparison of Arnie Caplin's bootleg label and Les Koenig's non-bootleg outfit. My first dozen "jazz" lps (in the late '50s) included an Ellington, Soul Trane, Cookin', Armstrong's Hot 5 and a record by Les and Larry Elgart. Make of that what you will. My next Coltrane was Africa Brass and things moved on.
