  1. I have never heard of this. Please site sources - even if you need to quote a critic.
  2. In spite of Lonson's birthday I don't smell lots of testosterone in the air.
  3. Just lucky in my book. b3-er is a pushover.
  4. I have been informed by critics since high school. If I had not discovered Down Beat in 1961 I would probably be a doctor or working at Wal-Mart. I had been led to jazz by my dad's love of the big bands and developed a thirst for more info. Martin Williams, Nat Hentoff, George Hoefer, Leonard Feather, John Tynan, Ira Gitler, Gilbert Erskine, Barbara Gardner, Ralph Gleason, Donal Henahan, Don DeMichael, Bill Mathieu, Pete Welding, John S Wilson, etc. We all need "somewhere" to test our opinions and attitudes. These folks did this for me. I do believe we all grow when we are challenged. Later in my life as my toes dipped into the water Terry Martin, Larry Kart, John Litweiler and others provided "nudges" worth gold. Sorry to say most current "jazz journalism" and opinions from the internet community do not seem to be as "eye opening" as journalistic messages from a remote scribe with no need for quick "appreciation". My edit is to add the names jazz writers Max Harrison, Michael James, G E Lambert, Albert McCarthy, Burnett James, Paul Oliver and Charles Fox to the list of "influences". Jack Cooke was a MoFo as well. Shit! I'm sure I forgot some. Unfortunately my influences were constrained by my typically American "monolingual" situation. Thanks to all.
  5. Just Bob Thiele, and he died.
  6. Nope, this is a project you should pay for.
  7. T'would be helpful to know what you mean by discography. If you want a simple label listing you can get this here: http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Labels/pablo.htm .
  8. Jump was a West Coast revivalist label (of the '40s) centering around the Bob Crosby band. Years ago I was a distributor for the label and am ashamed to say I can't recall the name of the label producer/owner. All I can say is he was a fine fellow and he created a label reflecting his taste. Some really good music there.
  9. I proposed this back on BNBB. If you think "some reissue", either cd or vinyl makes a whole lot of sense, write a budget - list all costs and returns. Please do this as a substitute for 'whining".
  10. IIRC, there is a 7 cd box called something like "Humming, 1993". This is the one to get. The last page of the booklet lists a phone number where you can get your own personal insult for making sounds during the performance.
  11. I am sure the Bush/Ashcroft circle frowns on biwire situations. Be VERY cautious. I think this is horseshit unless you have a desk full of green magic markers.
  12. To belatedly answer Bertrand's question about the unissued Freddie Redd. It was recorded the day after Lonely City with Duvivier and Riley. Seven tunes were recorded. The info was in the Mosaic/Redd booklet and is listed in Bruyninckx. I have copies of the tapes, but no copies of the studio log to sort out takes, etc.
  13. The two Dameronia lps will NOT fit on one cd.
  14. The traditional can of worms.
  15. GEEZ! I have around 4000 thoughts in my head about this. I hope I can clear some of the shit and have something "smart" to say tomorrow.
  16. Hans, what does "happy birthday" mean to you? Does it have some real significance? Please tell us about it. Why curry favor with the "Jazz Shrink"?
  17. In this thread I chastised Jim, Big Al and Soul Stream for ignoring (thus dissing) Baby Face Willette. In spite of the bad feelings we went to hear Organissimo at Billy's Lounge last night. Spotting Ann and me in the crowd, Jim started the first set with "Swingin' At Sugar Ray's"! Then he blew it by calling it "Stompin' At Sugar Ray's"! We still have a way to go "Big Boy".
  18. Funny you say that. In my original message I typed something like that and deleted it.
  19. How many Teddy Wilson Mosaics did he sell to group members and how/why? I was amazed by the care in packing of my shipments from him.
  20. Knepper is my favorite trombonist after Dickie Wells. I was lucky enough to work with both of them. Life can be GRAND.
  21. So have Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. I'm not sure about Buddy Bolden.
  22. Another vote for the Eddy Louiss date. Rene Thomas and Kenny Clarke round out the trio.
  23. That'll be tomorrow night.
  24. Alfredson, Big Al and Soul Stream need to "get right"! No mention of the greatest organ record of all time - "Face to Face". I once wrote "this record is the reason God allowed Mr Hammond to desecrate the organ".
