  1. The sound is still not what it should have been, but the cd is better. Getz recorded this on his own and delivered the tapes to Columbia, which probably explains the delay in putting this stuff out. Columbia has this band "live" somewhere in the vaults. I asked Stan why these recordings hadn't been issued and he said "Ask them".
  2. My all time "champ" is the '30s recording by Schnabel. For a modern stereo version I recommend the Charles Rosen version on IMP (from England). This was available from Cybermusicsurplus for cheap. Maybe elsewhere.
  3. Yes, Roscoe played the lp for me when they returned (from Europe), I received a cassette, and now own a copy of the boot cd. edit to insert "from europe".
  4. I have, and it is a VERY good one. I think I posted about this before. I have not heard the most recent Pi disc but think the previous one is "good for fans". I'd hate it if this was someone's introduction to the band. Buy around a dozen cds first.
  5. Some of the Timeless/Baystate titles might have originated with the Dutchman, but I think the bulk are of Japanese origin.
  6. Oop Bop Sh'Bam!
  7. Ubu's cover is correct. This is the BN cd for the combined lps. The cover you posted is the dreaded Applause item.
  8. Do you own a gun?
  9. You want Al to remember a really shitty rent-a-car company?
  10. Bill Dixon "Considerations 1972-76" volume 1.
  11. I love it when these guys from Texas are "heartbroken".
  12. Hommage to Africa is very, very good.
  13. I thought it was Just Dryin' Out.
  14. He also played 'Round Midnight on New Groove (Columbia).
  15. All from old recollections: Levis Strauss was always a fiercly anti-union company and jumped at any chance for cheap labor.
  16. I think it's a wonderful disaster. Would not be without it.

    Very nice report. Thanks, Red.
  18. That must be very messy.

    Bill Dixon

Gee, the Oxley was under my radar. Didn't know it existed. I have a couple of lps on the Fore label (from Italy) that never get mentioned. They are titled Considerations 1 & 2. The material comes from Dixon's private stash and was recorded 1972-76. Solo, duo, trio and larger ensemble pieces.

    Leon Thomas

Can't help ya. I'd rather listen to Irene than hear Leon gargling with marbles.
  21. That email address looks good to me. It is also available from Cadence, Jazz Loft, True Blue, Okkadisk, Verge and Tower (special order).
  22. I was at the performance GregK mentions. I thought the "exit" was amazingly small considering the usual University "subscription audience". I was down front, so my understanding might have been off, but I did not hear noises behind me and only a few good seats opened up. Us AARPsters stayed - he's our guy after all. It was the "well dressed '30s crowd" that gave up primo seats. From the layout of the mikes (and the drum baffles), I suggest all the concerts are being recorded. Hope this AARPster lives long enough to buy it.
  23. FDX286 is not a numbering series I have seen before. Could it be a non-US issue of the common lp?

    Bill Dixon

Sorry you are too late for the cybermusicsurplus dump. Cadence is your next best bet, after Amazon (used). I have lost hope for a reissue of the Dixon/Shepp lp. Bill's just too damn ornery (sp?). I think this contains his most impressive playing.
