  1. Plastic alto? HELLO EVERYONE! Just 'cause the horn is white doesn't make it plastic. I don't think Ornette has played a plastic instrument for some years. It is a brass instrument with white enamel. You should be able to tell from the "ringing" tone. Don Heckman is an alto player (or used to be) and should have known better - or had better seats. As Dave says, up, over and out.

The stuff on the Storyville is at least as good as the Fontana material. Did you know the band made a Fontana lp without Cherry (he was late)? It is called Rufus and is fine as well.

This is not from Fontana. This is a Storyville reissue of material originally on two Sonet lps. The first volume was issued on lp by Delmark when I worked there. Unfortunately an 11+ minute piece titled "Cisum" has been omitted to keep it to one disc.
  4. The source is probably a battered reference acetate.
  5. Hey Mike, don't rag on my man Maynard. He played flat alot, just like Dizzy. B-)
  6. Please explain the problems you had with the ones you "looked at". What did you like about them? What's your definition of "several"? I hope my questions aren't too harsh.
  7. I lost track of "where I was" and was about to suggest merging this thread with the "Miles, WTF" thread - but we are already there. B-) FWIW SoS is pretentious and at the same time some of the greatest recorded statements by a trumpet playing musician on record. Magnificent. Nothing wrong with pretensions if they pay off like this. I've loved, and been affected by, this music for 40+ years.
  8. Meester Mooster, I suggest you change your buying habits.
  9. Go Bears!!!!!
  10. I hope I can make the GR gig.
  11. I think my label might start a new 300 cd series of Milt Hinton cds. B-)
  12. They have not yet exhibited any respect for "leaders', just like recent Fresh Sounds.
  13. Me thinkst (?) a bunch of folks here have the back of anyone questioning the value of Evans' "influence".
  14. AND stuff was closed off too. Not such a simple "forward" progression. It took Miles about a decade to "rediscover" the blues.
  15. So the premise of the thread is discovering pianists from 30 or 40 years ago wanting to move to the next step (and beyond) who didn't reach their goal? Sad.
  16. If you don't get Miles, move on. Have a life. Your loss. What else do you need an instruction book for?
  17. So you really didn't want an answer. Silly me.
  18. Red was replaced because one (or more) of his "abuse problems" made him unreliable. But, Bill....................
  19. Great! Sounds like the best thing to do. Thanks for sharing and all the best for the 3 of you.
  20. My cd matches the info jazzmessenger lists. It is a 1998 mini lp numbered CY-18059
  21. That seals the deal for me.
  22. Copy and paste, for one.
  23. I have most of the early stuff (pre-'50s) on 78 and the lp reissues are pale by comparison. I have multiples of the Port of Harlem and much of the rest. I even supplied BN with "source material". Get a grip boys......and yes I really do have the 78s. Each change of technology has pluses and minuses. Get over it.
  24. Looks like Prestone to me.
