  1. I see someone 'fessed up and joined CA in the "wise" category.
  2. I was in graduate school there, and met Chuck when I went by the record store and was amazed by the Art Ensemble window display, lps by Roscoe, Lester, et al. Asking who did it, I met Chuck. (Didn't know who it was I met until telling this story online, and Chuck said it was him). Caught the AEC performing in Spring '72 at the Newman (Roman Catholic) Center just off campus. Chuck used to run a record-store operation here in Bloomington, too. There's a guy here who hosts and performs in a weekly jazz gig here who still talks of his awe as a teenager at going in to buy AEC records, and how Chuck brought them to B-town for a concert. Actually Michael Bourne was in charge of the concert. "Babycakes" as Mike would say. My occupational travels moved us in an Iowa City, Chicago, Bloomington, Madison, Boston, Chicago, Whitehall adventure.
  3. 60. Only 45 years left.
  4. And we have the WINNER, ladies and gentlemen! Please step forrward and accept the trophy for "actually wanting to hear a Ron Carter solo".
  5. Yup. I remember Pete as a record salesman in Chicago before his entry into the LA show biz scene. He was the "master of the broom". A couple of guys on this group remember the distinct "culture" of record salesmen of the '50s - '70s.
  6. Don't fruits have sex all the time, with no guilt?
  7. It is all "just artwork", Reid Miles' sense of humor. The 2 session aspect of the date was less of an issue in the lp format with the sessions segregated. This record also spans the Hackensack to Englewood Cliffs move. 2 wonderful dates combined.
  8. In my haste I misread you post. I apologize.
  9. It is all MARKETING! BN offered retailers repressings of discontinued titles. The deal was no returns. BN would take the orders, fill 'em and the stores 'owned' the product. The friggin' stickers were to alert BN that no returns were acceptable. Nothing "special" about this stuff.
  10. As the guy who discovered the 2 versions, and big having opinions about the 2, I need to go back and listen again.
  11. I don't think so. Is this a "whites are just as good as blacks" thread?
  12. I have listened to Hank/Hamid for almost 30 years. I feel he has an unfortunate habit of "following". I want more from a drummer. But on the other side of things he's one of the best still operating.
  13. As a major "pisser" on Rat's "intellectual" thread I should say something, I guess. If it came up again I'd respond the same way. The reason is his choice of a JMc piece. I have known JMc since 1966 and think he's an idiot and a real jerk. I foolishly had this identical fight with John back then and it is really old news to see the same crap again. If I'd encountered the piece in the magazine I'd have ignored it, but read the letters to follow. I think Rat made an unfortunate choice and paid the price. I should also say I am suspicious of "intellectual discussions" which tend to have more words than ideas and a 40 year old fight fits that bill for me. edit to correct the year I met JMc.
  14. Boy, are you smart! I don't believe you have a clue about how such decisions are made. Some by artists, some by "businessmen". Maybe some of these decisions need to be respected.
  15. So........Art and/or Alfred were not happy with the results and decided to record the band "live". WHY do we "deserve" to hear stuff just because is was on tape? This is something I have never understood.
  16. Off topic, but I was involved with the US issue of this record. The photo of Shepp was taken at the Down Beat jazz fest when he played with the Coltrane Quartet. I was there and the late Bill Abernathy took the shot. Back to your usual programming.
  17. Company 2 - Evan Parker, Anthony Braxton and Derek Bailey on Incus.
  18. I dig them too and didn't want to imply that I didn't. Those guys get their point across in their own way and chops and polish aren't a part of it - it wouldn't be the same any other way. You don't have to be a virtuoso to get your point across, but virtuosity shouldn't count against you either. For once Mister Z, I have a huge problem with something you said. Those guys have more chops than needed for a "real" message. There are thousands of "faster/cleaner" players out there executing "empty nothings". Being able to communicate is the ultimate "chops" - don't have much to do with tight lips, finger speed, etc. This sounds like the "Monk wars" all over again.
  19. How the hell did Fritz get into this discussion?
  20. AND the band recorded much of the same material 5 weeks later "at the jazz corner of the world".
  21. If you are interested in Henderson, avoiding the Classics is a big mistake. I have all of them and the 2 Neatwork suppliments.
  22. Steve's original question seems to have been lost in the flurry of posts. This was not meant as a "time machine" question. Steve seems to have ignored the results as well. I hope he returns.
  23. Granz didn't stop recording jam sessions for Verve, he just started giving the sessions names like Sittin' In, Jazz Giants of '58, Tour de Force, etc.
  24. Get the Bobo Stensen box.
  25. hey, Meester Mooster, if you need any Okka Disks I'm your big supplier daddy.
