  1. A niggling doubt I had in the back of my mind from last year's festival statistics, with the greater attendance and larger number of acts, was that this festival would grow too big. And the fact that Ashley Capps no longer owns Bonnaroo and now solely has Big Ears, leads me to wonder if Bonnarroo was subsidising Big Ears, which allowed BE to have a smaller, weirder lineup. And now that Big Ears has only itself to subsidise, that growth in attendance numbers and the booking of more mainstream acts has become an economic imperative to keep it going. I have a fear that the festival's growth in size and attendance will suppress what made it great in the first place, and the future is looking like a SXSW-in-Appalachia.
  2. Lineup revealed, and , if you're really into John Zorn, they are have another minifestival (again). Apart from Mary Halvorson doing Amaryallis and Belladonna, there just is not anythig to get me excited abut this one. The main lineups are very, how shall I put it, Mojo Magazine.
  3. Surprised no one mentioned it's basically a Billie Holiday imitation, and it's a plague. Get your own style, damn it!
  4. Oh Man, a substantial article about Roscoe Mitchell by Terry Martin from April 1967, with quotes from Lester Bowie! Mitchell revieals he played with Coltrane when the latter was at the Plugged Nickel recently. https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/DownBeat/60s/67/Down%20Beat%201967-04-06.pdf
  5. Just awful. Someone who was worth watching.
  6. Apparently he is in home hospice care now.
  7. My dream Ascenion: Toots Theilemans, harmonica. That's it.
  8. I was lucky to have seen them a couple times when it was both Ralf and Florian. But their live show rarely changes and with only one original member I passed this time around.
  9. Having a great time. The Leo Smith night was worth the price of the festival alone. Right now I’m enjoying Oliver Lake’s Justice project. I honestly thought there would be more people attending this festival, and one-third of the crowd seems to be a photographer.
  10. He’s being honored at the Vision Festival but not playing an instrument. Does anyone know if there is a reason for that?
  11. Mark-- I look forward to your columns every month. They always send me right back to listening. The rest of you: Just pay for a damn subscription, jeesh.
  12. I ordered the CD directly from Resonance but haven't got it yet, has anyone else? never mind, got it today!
  13. This will be my first. Who's going?
  14. I was there that weekend too. I'm a George Walker fanatic, so I've been enjoying the NSO'strawl through his Sinfonias.
  15. Rumps Werton's instrumental Wurlitzer record of all Joy Division songs.
  16. Speaking of John Norris, I came to Coda very near the end of it's run, but bought old back issues. I miss magazines like that.
  17. Reading the article now and listeing to Saturday Nite in the Cosmos! Over chirstmas i listened to the entire Mosaic Select Blue Notes while I was sick in bed. Thanks for the reminder for me to tackle those Soul Note and Timeless records!
  18. Not to humblebrag, but I laid out the big bucks so I don't have to stand at those places anymore (although they are not ideal, I remember that they were only folding chairs). Got fat and tired the last two years.
  19. Meredith Monk and Sparks are the must-not-miss events for me. Anything with Andrew Cyrille, too. Have to make a lot of sacrifices, though. Diatom Ribbons is at the exact same time as a Meredith Monk performance though. I've somehow missed Kris Davis anytime she has played live in my vicinity. One year I was in New York and saw she was performing at the Stone. When I got there I was informed she was stuck in traffic or something and couldn't make it.
