there's a LOT of stuff not on Mosaic.. that one must have... Take almost all 'Trane leader dates for one... All on Impulse... (will they eventually be re-re-re-released by Mosaic in 15 years... probably).... As well as all Prestige/Riverside/OJC stuff... Bill Evans...Monk.... Won't see Mosaic for a long time....

thanks Jack... Always helping to clear things up...!! I might have to get that Slide Hampton now.... The Art Farmer "The Time and the Place" is a fine record, but unfortunately, it's not really live. The band did record at the Museum of Modern Art, but the sound was not up to snuff, so they went back into the studio and cut the album, then fake applause was added. Amazingly, the unissued material that turned up on the 2-fer reissue also has the fake applause. Mosaic makes no mention of this, so evidently the myth will be perpetuated. I wonder if undoctored tapes actually still exist? The Slide Hampton "Drum Suite" is another rare item that's nice to see available again.

A live Art Farmer date sounds good to me....

just got off the phone with Mosaic... and because I was curious... I asked... About a year from now... the Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions may/will go into the running low category... the reason I bring it up now... $192.... (I've heard a little bit of it... and I'm saving my pennies....) and once its gone.. this puppy's not coming back....

I've heard a lot of mixed things about this one... .mainly people believing that there is a lot of "non-jazz" on the set... So how would compare this to say the Farlow??? I've tried but I just can't get into Joe Pass... something about him I find a bit "clinical"... Like too much emphasis on technique ... But... as always I'm open to your opinions... Isn't this due to go OOP soon??? This is one of the last sets that I'm going to waffle on until "Last Chance." -

You got the Dizzy???? How's that possible? Order placed Thursday, arrived today! That's a quick turnaround, given the Easter weekend AND tax deadline! JJ Set #4885. Dizzy #3774, & PC #2558, if anyone's keeping track of those... -
I have the Stitt... and from what I remember there are not that many alternate takes... In my opinion... this is a MUST HAVE Mosaic.... I was on the fence for a long time with this due to the size and cost... but I have to say.. I'm really glad I have it... If you like plain-ole quartet be-bop..... then you'll should like this set... If the quartet thing will get to you... then don't get it.... but I for one... and very glad I did....

anybody know anything about this? I assume this is related to the Concord/Fantasy acquisition.. but does anyone have any more info... Alan???? http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...330794975&BAB=D thanks

yea I preordered this one a few days ago... I've always loved those albums... I think those albums and Kind of Blue still are my fave Miles.... So is what you guys are saying is that we should expect the sound on the new CD (the TV tapings) to suck? -
Don't know... but I'd buy this one.... !!! His work on the JJ set is one of my highlights....

interesting.... I bought this set with doubts... and I just cannot get into it.... Glad you're enjoying it though -
okay this set was discussed (pre-arrival) with a great deal of FUROR on this site... Now that I've got it and listened to the whole set once... I must say I like it a lot... Upsides: 1. REALLY like the flautist and vibes on the last 3 or 4 Cds... Sam Most and Mike Manieri... Had never heard of Most before.... excellent... 2. The live Flip Phillips date.... excellent.. From what I recall some were pissed since (my understanding) this was released on the Phillips box and was re-released on the Rich set... If that's correct, I can understand being ticked. As I didn't have the Phillips set... this was new for me... 3. The band definitely swung... 4. Not as many drum solos as I feared... and many of the solos I actually liked and thought were appopriate and kinda fit musically.... 5. Strong Mosaic sound... Downsides: 1. A FEW too many drum solos... (but this is really minor as I thought there would be a LOT more). That's it... I haven't had (and don't know when I will have) a chance to read the booklet yet... But a STRONG from me... as I had no Rich prior to this. Despite all the strong feelings about this set (and whether he "deserved" the Mosaic treatment), I definitely recommend this set and am glad Mosaic put it together.... Am I the only one who got it?

yup ... old news////
-
thank u ron... You know, you can put together almost all of the tracks from the Desmond Mosaic with 5 CDs that are currently available: First Place Again (reissued on Gambit) Take Ten (RCA) Bossa Antigua (RCA) Glad To Be Unhappy (RCA) Easy Living (RCA) So quit your whining already!

now here's another question/issue.... It looks like on the face of it.. there's some overlap with this box set? http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...320218009&BAB=E Whats the scoop on this one? (4 cds is a lot better than 11)? the simple dilemma I face is this.... The Nat box was one of the 2 Mosaics that I missed and desperately wish I had... (the other being the Paul Desmond box, which is another story for another day).... Since he, like Duke, and a few others recorded SO much and SO many labels reproduce/reissue/re-re-re-re-issue/butcher his stuff... I find it impossible to know which are his legit recordings (with good worthwhile remastering or alt./unreleased tracks) and which are crap... So that's one of my inclinations toward this set... I get a lot of him in a legit set. I did order the 3CD Capitol Transcription Sessions.. but haven't receieved it yet... I have 4 single CD's including the After Midnight Sessions... So if... I don't get this Bear Family set... what WOULD you recommend? SO....

Not knowing the licensing issues (esp. globally) .. What's the odds are that Mosaic/blue note is going to release some of this stuff at some point in the future? I'm finding this decision agonizing... Again, don't base anything on the fact that you missed out on the Mosaic. This set contains a different side of Nat's career. I think it's great that people are interested, btw. I wouldn't have expected a lot of folks to be interested in 11 CD's/$200 of late Nat, but I'm among those who enjoys a lot of Nat's later work (just don't need or want this much), so it's nice to see this box at least getting some serious consideration. How long do BF sets remain in print? I might recommend that before taking the plunge, it would be pretty easy to find a disc or two (perhaps used, or at least at good prices) of some of the best of that material, and see what it does for you.
-
thanks for the info.... I'm nervous that I seem to be one of the few here that is very interested in this set... (esp. since I missed out on the Mosaic...)
-
I'm up in the air on this one... I didn't get the Mosaic set and regret it.... What is everyone doing?

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
tranemonk replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
OKay.... I also have it... but I'm trying to get through the Buddy Rich set... (which I'm really liking...despite all the furor when it was announced..) Excellent review.... You're raising my eagerness.... I've had mine for about a week now but I've only managed to play it right through once. First impressions are: 1) it is up to Mosaic's usual high standards for presentation and sound quality. 2) Of his own recordings I seem to prefer the two earliest dates - Full Nelson (Verve) & Fantabulous (Argo). Perhaps that's because they are the ones where he actually plays alto/tenor sax instead of just conducting/arranging. 3) The Kennedy Dream (Impulse) sounds so much better than my original vinyl that it could be a different recording! 4) I don't think the Shirley Scott album - Roll-em (Impulse) is going to grow on me 5) The Pee Wee Russell album - The spirit of '76 (Impulse) is lovely. I have never heard him play before, having always associated his clarinet playing with Dixieland Jazz which I'm not keen on. However his playing with the big band is absolutely stunning and has meant that I will be investigating other recordings of his. 5) There is probably too much Jimmy Smith in the set but it does sound so very good, if perhaps a little too familiar. If you like other of his albums or you just want to upgrade existing vinyl then I don't think you will be disappointed with the set
