  1. I hate EMI so much for this that it goes against the grain to buy anything from them anymore...
  2. Now it is time for EMI to do a budget box reissue of all the Roulette material. Go on, EMI. You know you want to!
  3. It seems I was. Those are the ones which would have to be changed and it won't happen. That's where my problem is. They play on a quality system, but sometimes fail on others, and may not be 100% future compatible. I'd like to think consumer resistance helped stop it but maybe not.
  4. Evidently the master used to 'press' the CDs has the CC applied - it is not a process applied to the actual CD. Not least, it includes an extra non-musical track, which is plainly part of the master. Many of us already own this music in other formats. The sonic effect when you put the disc in the car, in an old PC, or in an ageing CD player, is that it won't play at all - which is a deficit, I'd say. How many of these disks do you own?
  5. Can we - EVER - fully account for evil in a world made by a benign creator - ?
  6. They could easily use the US masters. Not that I think they will - but it's an option. They'd have to redo all the inserts as well, and even the disk printing. But they love us! So maybe they will!!
  7. As EMI has abandonned Copy Control in June, I guess the previously released copyprotected CDs will be repressed as regular CDs when they have sold all of the old copyprotected discs in stock. That could take some time though. I doubt it. It is expensive to create new masters. They didn't re-press the pre-CC items and I doubt whether they will withdraw it from existing ones - just not worth it, and CD sales are comparatively low after initial release. In the UK they push these things out in perpetual sales at £5 a time so I don't see the fine point about CC being an issue. Might be wrong.
  8. The idiots who respond to spam are also the reason that we ALL get spammed all the time. If no-one responded it would never get sent.
  9. R.I.P. We are big fans of Maynard after seeing his more recent London appearances.
  10. Yes that is what I thought. However I can also report that my wma's from the CC-ed disk are pretty immaculate - I am listening to them again now. I really don't hear any problems... I don't get it. That is why I thought the software installation was the first line of defence. It won't play in the car at all though.
  11. No, you're confusing the Cactus Datashield (EMI) with Suncomm (BMG) copyprotection schemes. Cactus Datashiled does not rely on software loading from the CD. It's the data themselves that are corrupted, resulting in crackling noises on the ripped files, unless the drive is immune to the scheme. Well... I did buy one and it DID try to load software...
  12. What is so ridiculous is that these copy fine. You just have to refuse the software it wants to load then access it normally. What WAS the point?
  13. Blue Harlem is TOCJ 66015 Topsy is TOCJ 66016 I haven't got either so I can't help you!
  14. I still find it hard to buy South African grapes, and while the end of CC in theory ends my general EMI/Blue Note boycott the RVG resistance is pretty much in place. Still I bought this 'upgrade' and wasn't too impressed by the sound. Depends what you like, of course, but while the drum kit clatter is increased I don't feel it does anything for the tenor which sounds pretty muted (and yes, it sounds like a strangled old tape, lacking color).
  15. Am I right in thinking the original release featured the extra track with GG to make up the time and the reissue doesn't? Sure 3 Coins is on the CD of Workout too, where it isn't really relevant either - but I mean...
  16. Not even if I start smoking? Maybe. Can you blow it out your ears? I've been told to blow it out my ass before. Does that count? Only if it leaves nicotine stains on your pants. MG Those icons of cool. They're a breed apart.
  17. Not even if I start smoking? Maybe. Can you blow it out your ears?
  18. That's going to be you, I'm afraid! The TOCJ is hard panned with horns and piano on the left and bass drums right, with some seepage between channels. I'm not surprised the new edition doens't go with that. That said, the TOCJ is pretty good, IMO and I won't be getting the (ahem) 'upgrade.'
  19. I think vinyl will retain its collectability and CDs will become worthless. I'd say CDs are already more or less worthless since once you have one you can make an endlessly transferable copy, and the booklet (in a crappy box or digipac) will never have the fetish value of an LP sleeve, especially not an original or 'period' LP sleeve. Higher quality streamed music or music files may start to come in more widely though, but I don't expect to see too much of this in the near or nearish future. CDs and their packaging really are a pile of crap though, with only slight exceptions for Mosaic booklets and the occasional Sony or Verve box set, so I'll be glad to see them gone.
  20. The atavistic releases are choice, no doubt about it. I'd like to see them do some of the early ICP releases.
  21. Maybe we'll get a good price on it in the Concord sale?

  23. Hi Van Basten and welcome. You've even shocked a few people here with your enthusiasm, so please stick around, I think you'll find some like-minded people here.
  24. Uh... what I said. Just discovering these as a source for sampling hard-to-find material. Thanks for any tips!
