  1. Life Rays on Soul Note is incredible. His best, IMO (though I haven't heard any Steeplechases).
  2. Couple of gems there. Coin Coin Chapter Two is startling stuff. Indeed. I've listened to both volumes several times on Spotify, but with the new one arriving soon I figured I should start to buy them up.
  3. Recording with program: http://ranblake.com/media/audio/suffield-streams-and-standards-ran-blake-at-an-die-musik/?utm_source=December+2014&utm_campaign=December+2014&utm_medium=email
  4. Eddie Prevost/Tom Chant/John Edwards - All Change (Matchless) Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile (Constellation)
  5. You are a couple of hours from New Orleans? It's worth it to travel to hear music. Yes. Currently life circumstances (I have a 3 year old and work nights and weekends) prevent this but I hopefully in years to come I'll get a new job and have more leeway. Life is long indeed. Though it is a sincere goal to see Kidd Jordan before it's too late.
  6. For a single CD, $35 is about tops, but that's only for the very few at the tip-top of my list. I could go up to about $35-40 for a double or triple with the same caveat. I don't really buy many box sets, and never ones over $60 or so, so I can't say about that. Same with vinyl, almost never buy it and never drop much when I do. I think the most I ever spent on a single disc is about $25 for Joe McPhee's As Serious As Your Life. I paid $45 for Braxton/Santa Cruz. I also spent $66 on the two volumes of Ran Blake's Painted Rhythms. Generally, though, I'm a deals man and try to get CDs in the $3-15 range. You'd be surprised how things fall in your lap if you wait, like with the two Tony Oxley CBS CDs I pined after for years: I got both for $10/free shipping.
  7. ........,... ..... ....... (sigh)
  8. He can move. I like his record with Peter Evans, Charity Chan, & Weasel Walter.
  9. Good album. Now I'm getting nostalgic for the music of my youth! Maybe I should pull out "umber" by Bitch Magnet tonight Hah, yeah Bitch Magnet are great. Saw their reunion tour come through NYC a couple years ago. Star Booty (Roman Candle OG) was on deck earlier today as well. Now: Evergreen - s/t - (Hi-Ball) strong, strong post-punk from Louisville's heyday with Britt Walford on drums. Haven't heard that one in about 15 years!
  10. Hm, to each their own I guess. the Bridge is my favorite 60s Rollins with Hawk & East Broadway close behind.
  11. The Capers posted up there is the second issue.
  12. Sorry, never turned it up. I was lucky to find the Fred Anderson release from this series at Reckless, but I've never seen it anywhere else either.
  13. And most certainly we would not have this concept of "in jazz" to worry over to begin with.
  14. Yep. If guys like Chinen just shit the fuck up for once maybe things like this wouldn't happen in the first place.
  15. I cop to having the Lou Donaldson as I like his 50s stuff but surely not enough to shell out for the Mosaic, which is the only source for most of these records. I would not consider another one of these as the packaging is pathetic and the ethical implications are manifold.
  16. Amazon Christmas money-- kind of hard finding stuff I wanted that was in stock there, but here's what I got: Schlippenbach Trio - First Recordings John Escreet Trio + Evan Parker - Sound, Space, Structures Dunmall/Grimes/Cyrille - Profound Sound Trio: Opus de Life Assif Tsahar - Code Re(a)d Jason Adasiewicz - From the Region and a Hank Mobley collection thing that is unmentionable hereabouts...
  17. RIP. A good life but a sad loss.
  18. Amiga LPs are always so tantalizingly cheap but always locked in the Czech Republic behind obscene shipping and dodgy mail and questionable payment services.
  19. Wow, this thread ties together a lot of things I've thought about re: jazz & the indie rock press then (ca. mid-90s-early 00s) and now. More later, maybe.
  20. So why don't I own it? Something to remedy in 2015 Start saving! It's a tough one to find at a legitimate price.
  21. I didn't know that. How sad. I was greatly enjoying his playing with Thomas Chapin last night, very intuitive.
  22. Fantastic record.
  23. I have a true soft spot for John Surman's solo records from the 80s, which feature a lot of soprano. I won't go so far as to call them a guilty pleasure since a) I don't believe in such a thing and b) I think the albums have reasonable musical value, but it's nonetheless an appreciation that I sense is not widely shared.
