  1. There remain many unrecorded Nichols compositions, other than those covered by Rudd and the Jazz Composers' Collective featuring our own Frank Kimbrough. Frank also appears on Teri Roiger's So It Always Happens, the title track of which is an unrecorded Herbie tune with lyrics! Some of the unrecorded pieces are in the Music Division of the Library of Congress; others are elsewhere in different places TBD. The complete list of what is at LC can be found on their website, based on a list I compiled after I collected them. It is tricky to find; the call number is m1356.2.N. Bertrand.
  2. If you are in D.C. tonight, there is a group of local players led by trumpeter Joe Herrera that is playing the entire Unity album by Larry Young plus tunes from Into Somethin' and possibly other things from the Shaw/Henderson/Young repertoire. The incredible Harry Appelman is on organ. I saw this two weeks ago and it was fabulous. I plan to be there again. The show is at Twins' on U street starting at 8. Bertrand.
  3. The old Soothsayer has been replaced by an RVG version so I doubt you will find any of the old corrected pressings in retail stores - probably only used. The RVG is much better but still not perfect - there must be some problems with the master tape, at least on 'Lady Day'. Bertrand.
  4. 1) In that segment from Nancy in 1979 (including a snippet of the Shepp big band playing a Cal Massey tune), the guy with the handlebar mustache makes a statement that comes off as borderline racist. 2) For 4 euros, you can buy an 11 minute video of Jackie Mac in the early 60s playing 'Francisco', 'Lover Man' and 'Minor March'. If I get the DVD, will it play on a player in the U.S.? Bertrand.
  5. 1) Monk and Bill Evans were the estates with which there were problems 10 years ago, IIRC. 2) I know they have a Hutcherson/Land video from Antibes 1969; I hope that pops up. Bertrand. P.S. Message edited to remove reference to a posting that was deleted.
  6. I never thought this would happen!!! Is this permanent? Bertrand. By permanent, I mean did they clear the rights? There were some problems years ago with some CDs they put out - someone had forgotten to get permission. 6 euros is a bargain.
  7. He's back from China; I saw him at Westminster a few weeks ago. He usually plays once a week (Tuesday?) at Utopia on U street. Bertrand.
  8. Pee Wee does look like a woman in that one... I thought he/she was dead, but maybe not. I would not want to interview that creep. Bertrand.
  9. I have most of Ben's CDs and they are all great, especially the previous one. I haven't gotten the new one yet, but it won't be long... Bertrand.
  10. Joyeux anniversaire! Bertrand.
  11. http://www.ecampus.com/book/9780066213019 The site above has a release date of 1/1/1900. We should have seen some review by now. Bertrand.
  12. 2019 is really 2010 in Canadian years. Bertrand.
  13. What do we know about the manuscripts? Bertrand.
  14. $2.50 for a gig that includes Coltrane and Rollins? $4.00 for Monk, Rollins, KD, Blue Mitchell etc.? The mind boggles. Bertrand.
  15. Hope you had a great one! Bertrand.
  16. Congratulations! They can start an organ trio. Bertrand.
  17. I have a few questions about this site. I saw they dropped the price on the 2 Weather Report shows, which have definitely never been issued, so I was going to get them. 1) Cornell 1973 is $4.98 - MP3 only. I assume I can put this in iTunes and burn a CD? 2) Lenox Inn is $6.98 for the MP3, and $8.98 for FLAC. I assume FLAC is better sound quality? Can I still move this to iTunes? Can I still burn a CD? Should I buy the MP3 if I am trying to use iTunes? Once I've gone through these, I will post the correct set lists. Thanks for helping out an old man who still doesn't quite get all this stuff. Bertrand.
  18. Picked it up tonight at Borders' (that 40% coupon came in handy). Looking forward to reading it. Glad to see it came with an inventory of compositions, a no-brainer for any biography of a great composer. I will see Kelley Sunday at the Monk competition. Bertrand.
  19. What the hell was I talking about with the J. Edgar Hoover thing? I have no clue what I was thinking. Bertrand.
  20. Did they ever announce a date for that Wayne Shorter museum gig? Thanks, Bertrand.
  21. Any ideas about the set list? I know from another source that 'Una Mas' is on here, but it is announced as 'My Injun From Brazil'. Bertrand.
  22. John Hall is a Congressman now (don't know what state). Maybe he can help me with something. Bertrand. Edit: New York Congressman. http://johnhall.house.gov/Biography.asp
  23. There was no crime on Dave's part, but just to be safe, he's fleeing to France anyway. Bertrand.
  24. I don't see the same info. I want to get the Hutcherson, and they are saying not until 2010. This is looking very bad for them - they are losing tons of business. Bertrand.
