Happy birthday to the best jazz webmaster ever (and a great musician of course)! Bertrand. -
Carl Allen / Rodney Whitaker on tour
bertrand replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
This is like that Far Side cartoon; the caption should read 'Joe fucks up'! I got to hang with Rodney and Carl when they were the rhythm section for the pianists at the Monk competition last year. We spent a whole Friday at rehearsals - real nice guys. Rodney used to teach Joe G. and B3-er and had real nice things things to say. Too bad they're not coming through DC - I'd be there in a heartbeat. Bertrand. -
Welcome Home, The Magnificent Goldberg!

Did no one tell Allen Lowe that any mention of wood-chippers on this forum leads to an automatic ban-for-life? God, I HATED that movie. -
There's a film of Larry with Tony Williams at Montreux (1971?). It's about 35 minutes. I have a 10th generation copy of this. Picture is grainy, but it's definitely Larry wearing the same outfit as on the cover of Lawrence Of Newark. The end with a 5-minute 'Big Nick'. They sort of play the head, and then Larry just plays some amazing freak-out shit for 5 minutes. I can't really describe it - it's beyond surreal. I hope Eagle Eye puts this out eventually, since they've been doing a lot of Montreux stuff. I was listening to the entire Into Somethin' while working out last night. Elvin really propels you to push harder on that exercise bike! I don't much about music theory, but I always thought Larry's harmonies on this record were just beautiful. It's relaxed yet 'urgent' at the same time. How does he do it? Harry Appelman, a DC-based pianist and organist, really captures that kind of sound when he's on the portable organ thing that he plays (in fact, 'Tyrone' is part of his repertoire). I hear it in his piano playing too. If you have a chance to catch him, I urge you to do so. One of the great unsung geniuses of the music, in my opinion. If life made sense, he's be recording like crazy. Bertrand.

Lee Morgan- Midnight Cowboy 45 single
bertrand replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
I had heard it before Lee was removed from the personnel listing, and I remember thinking he was pretty much inaudible on 'Popi', so I was not shocked when we was removed in later editions. If I remember correctly (I have a burn of this somewhere), I think you are describing the A-side. I remember thinking Lee as definitely audible (but not inspired) on that. It's amusing that Cuscuna never tried to tack this onto a Morgan BN CD as a bonus track. "Midnight Cowboy' is on a 'Blue Note at the Movies' compilation, probably long OOP. Bertrand. -
So am I morally allowed to burn a copy of someone's Groove Hut CD if I find someone who has it Bertrand.

Does Wayne Shorter play on the Jaco Japan 1982 stuff? I know he's on 2 tracks on WOM. Years ago, the public library in Paris had some Jaco live CD that had Wayne on it, which surprised me. I thought it was a boot. Bertrand.
-
What's Groove Hut? Is it legit and licensed from Universal (like Water Music), or some European boot (it hasn't been 50 years yet, so bootleg applies regardless in this context)? Argo belongs to Universal (or did last I checked) and they haven't done shit with the catalog. If they're starting to license, that's very good news, especially with Big John on board. Is this 2 CDs or a 2-fer? Where did you see it? I'll check the web. Bertrand.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

Lee Morgan- Midnight Cowboy 45 single
bertrand replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
Interesting. Between the first and second editions of the BN discography, Lee was dropped from the line-up for this track. I never asked MC about this, but since he actually made the change, I'm guessing he had some evidence. Bluerein, Was you response based on the second edition, or something you discussed with Michael? Tom, Are you sure it is Lee you are hearing, or perhaps Collins or Shepley? I've heard this once - I agree it's trash. Bertrand. -
Wouldn't it be more appropriate to say he 'landed' on that date
-
I had no idea Larry Young played on this. 1977? It must have been one of his last dates. You learn something every day. Bertrand.

Thanks for checking. There is a 1941 copyright deposit for a tune with this title by Monk, Guy and Page (with lyrics). We know Monk never recorded it, but as I was trying to track down the lead sheet today at the Library of Congress, I started coming up with these alternate scenarios, including the possibility that Guy or Page recorded it instead. Of course, I came up with this idea AFTER I left the builiding. They have the Lord CD-ROM. Bertrand.
-
Can anyone with access to the CD-ROM of the Lord discography tell me if there is a jazz recording out there with a tune entitled 'Harlem Is Awful Messy'? Joe Guy and/or Hot Lips Page may be on it. If anyone actually has such a record (assuming it exists), who is listed as composer? Thanks in advance, Bertrand.
-
Ummm....no. Bertrand.
-
I'll think more if someone pays me to do so. I've done enough work in the 'jazz biz' for free.
-
I agree with Big Al. The Landslide tracks could have been slipped in as bonus cuts. We should have suggested it to MC while there was still time. Bertrand.

Introducing was a 10 inch, not an album, so technically durium was right Bertrand.

I like that - I walk to the record store to get exercise! That's the ticket! Jan, you have given us married guys everywhere a great new excuse for going to the record store three times a week! Bertrand.

Sonny Berman?
bertrand replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Larry, You're absolutely right. That's the story - Chuck Wayne. What I have heard is that it was written for Berman (Solar - Sunny). I stand corrected. Bertrand. -
Sonny Berman?

Word on the street is that he wrote 'Solar', but don't tell the Miles estate I told you so. Bertrand. PS: I fucked up; see below. -
Lewis Porter has this as well, and does not seem to question whether it's Coltrane or not. FWIW, he says that Phil Schaap claims it's from 1950. Of course, we now know that Porter's book is no longer the 'definitive' book on 'Trane, no matter what the critics might have claimed back then As I like to say, it's the definitive bio on so-and-so, until the next definitive bio comes along. 'i know i personally really enjoy all the live shorter recordings i have heard from the 80s and would welcome an official release of some sort. there are many high quality recordings floating around the internet....' Exactly my point. I think Wayne is somewhat aware of this, but probably not to what extent. If these shows were released officially, they would sell as well as the Verve CDs, in my opinion. 'The music is pretty well recorded and is absolutely remarkable'. But it's not digitally recorded. How can you say that
