There's a whole section in One Fat Englishman where the title character is going from one jazz club to the next in NYC looking for some 'authentic' jazz. At one point he winds up in a club where one of the musicians (unnamed) keeps saying 'Vootie' and such, and announces 'John Colvootie'. I'm mostly concerned I would get in a fight with Hitchens. He's not, like, Ann Coulter with a penis, right? Bertrand.

What I also like about it is how 'relaxed' it sounds without being too laid back. It's a quality I find in another of my favorite records, Jackie's Destination...Out!!! I love intense hard bop (like many of Jackie's other records) but the 'relaxed' feel is a nice change of pace. Bertrand.

That Gryce half-session with Monk is a masterpiece. Three of the four tracks were new Monk tunes that he almost never played again. Bertrand.

Christopher Hitchens is interviewing the author of a mammoth new bio of Kingsley Amis (at a bookstore five minutes away). Amis is one of my favorite writers (despite his politics and mild bigotry), and Lucky Jim is probably my favorite book of all time. I only know of Hitchens by reputation. Could this be interesting, or will I be wasting my time? If an opportunity arises, I will squeeze in a question about how in almost every Amis novel, there is a scene where a character is listening to a 'new' Miles Davis album and wincing in pain. Bertrand.

'Stanley is great on "Vera Cruz", which Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau have been playing live'. Is this the Nascimento tune that Wayne Shorter also covered? Bertrand.

Those of us 8-track purists don't care if it is out on CD. Bertrand.

They're from the 'Danny D'Imperio collection'. Bertrand.

Need Help on Ornette Coleman's Whom Do You Work For?
bertrand replied to vodka's topic in New Releases
Let's not bury him quite yet Bertrand. -
You have been misinformed. Revenant is planning a Dookie Coleman box. His financial requirements are somewhat more modest than Ornette's. Bertrand.

Which Steig album(s) does Joe Chambers appear on? Thanks, Bertrand.

Do me a favor and please edit that grotesque nickname in the above posting. Let's see how you fare when you're 68 and have prostate problems Bertrand.

So I was right, the CD has the following bonus tracks: Recorda Me - Shade Of Jade - Isotope I wonder if there was a 2 LP set with the same name later, which had the 9 tunes I listed plus 'Gazelle' and 'Invitation'. Anyone? Bertrand.

Expect the wrath of Chuck Nessa to come down upon you! You can prevent this unfortunate outcome. There was a thread on the Mosaic Forum a few months a go. Some of use were concerned about this offshoot. I don't have time to search right now. Good luck! Bertrand.

Something is odd. I went to the Henderson discography at jazzdiscography.com, and they seemed to be saying that ALL the tracks on the Lighthouse CD were on the If You're Not Part... LP. Is this correct? So, if you have the original vinyl of If You're Not Part..., could you please answer the the following: 1) Which of these tracks on the CD were also on the LP (we know 'Invitation' was not, so I'm leaving it out): Recorda Me Carribean Fire Dance A Shade Of Jade Isotope 'Round Midnight Mode For Joe If You're Not Part Of The Solution, You're Part Of The Problem Blue Bossa Isotope (theme) 2) What was the original LP sequence? Also, it seems the 3 tracks that were on the bootleg Everest LP 'Jazz Patterns' are from the same residency at the Lighthouse, but are not on the CD, probably because Fantasy did not own them. Too bad. Bertrand. P.S. Could there have been TWO albums with this title - the original single LP, and a two-fer with bonus tracks including 'Gazelle'?
-
Yeah, putting a picture of Keepnews is a joke. 'Gazelle' is available on the two-fer In Pursuit of Blackness, hopefully not OOP. This is the LP it was on originally. Here's what their action plan seems to have been: 1) Reissue In Pursuit Of Blackness and Black Is The Color as a two-fer. The two records are complete on the two-fer, I think. Two tracks from the Lighthouse gigs are on the first record, 'Gazelle' and 'Invitation'. 2) The Lighthouse CD is the whole If You're Not... album, plus bonus tracks that were only in the box. They also tossed in 'Invitation', but 'Gazelle' did not fit. So if you want the whole Lighthouse material, you need both CDs. At least 'Gazelle' is somewhere, not like the missing Mobley tune. Bertrand.

Leroy Williams is an established drummer, and hardly some schmo off the streets. Andrew Hill, Hank Mobley, etc. etc. Screw Charlie Hunter Bertrand.

I had a chance to get to know Andrew a little bit over the past few years. He made the world a better place with his music. His courage in the face of his terrible illness is an inspiration. I am very surprised to find out he was older than always has been published. Goodbye, Andrew. Bertrand.

1) He said he was going to boil his description of the limitations of iTunes down to a paragraph or less, then uses 10 or so. 2) I bet my playlists are way cooler. Bertrand.

Thanks for reminding me about Osborne. I saw a video a few years back of her playing 'The Man I Love' with Billie Holiday watching awe-struck. It was amazing. Are there any CDs of hers currently available? Bertrand.

I knew I recognized him. Is he still alive? What's he been up to? I guess I could google him. Bertrand.

Here's the link for the chronology: http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Artists/Blakey/chron.htm I found 3 listings for the Five Spot during the time frame mentioned in my earlier post. 1) November 9, 1965: Chuck Mangione-tpt; Frank Mitchell-tsx; Lonnie Liston Smith-p; Reggie Johnson-b Five Spot, NYC (November 9, 1965) [VV 11/4/65 p.12, VV 11/11/65 p.14] 2) Five Spot, NYC (November into December 1965) [VV 11/25/65 p.12, VV 12/16/65 p.18] [personnel unknown] 3) Spring 1966: Chuck Mangione-tpt; Frank Mitchell-tsx; Chick Corea-p; Reggie Johnson-b Five Spot, NYC (3 weeks c. late May 1966) [db 6/30 p.15] I know booking policies were very different back then and groups could play for several weeks in a row (wasn't Monk at the Five Spot for 6 months straight?), so I'm going to guess the first two are the same residency, and the personnel is hopefully constant throughout, i.e. Liston Smith on piano. Why would they book the Messengers on 11/9, then again 3 weeks later? Of course, Mike F. has all this and much, much more on his laptop so he probably could tell me who was at the Five Spot the whole month - maybe there was another band sandwiched between two Messengers gigs. I'll follow up on this. My guess is this is the gig you saw, since you know it wasn't Corea. Of course, there could have been another Five Spot gig with Mitchell that is not listed in the chronology. If only there were a website listing all the Five Spot gigs... Bertrand. P.S. Looking over this, I see that we just need to get a hold of the Village Voice from 11/18/65. Any pack rats out there?

Who are the other two guys in the picture? Bertrand.
-
It's grotesque that the CD reissue of 'S Make It featured the truncated version of 'I Had A Ball'. They could have at least put the unedited version as a hidden bonus track. According to the Blakey chronology, the pianist could have been John Hicks, Lonnie Liston Smith, Mike Nock or even McCoy Tyner. Do you remember where you saw them and what year? Bertrand.

So what is the extent of the Frank Mitchell discography exactly? Here's what I can remember off the top of my head (I looked up the dates, of course): Art Blakey: Buttercorn Lady 1/1/66 and 1/9/66 Art Blakey: Hold On, I'm Coming 5/27/66 Lee Morgan: The Sixth Sense 11/10/67 Andrew Hill: 4/19/68 (issued as bonus tracks on the Grass Roots CD) Lee Morgan: Blues For Mr. Tatum 9/13/68 (3 tracks on the Sixth Sense CD, 3 tracks 'rejected') Anything else that I'm forgetting? I know of only one Mitchell composition on these dates: 'Extemporaneous'. That's all I found when I did a copyright search a few years back. That doesn't mean he didn't write other unrecorded and uncopyrighted pieces. They're probably lost forever. The Blakey chronology by Mike Fitzgerald and Steve Schwartz shows him with the Messengers between approximately 8/13/65 and 4/1/67. By 4/30/67, he had been repaced...by Joe Henderson (Billy Harper came in soon after). Note that Keith Jarrett was replaced fairly quickly by Chick Corea. Bertrand.
