  1. As an example, I saw the September 1986 Paris concert by Miles (later broadcast on TV). They mostly played the songs from Tutu (which had just come out). The performances were a million times better than what was on the album. We Want Miles is probably my favorite 80's Miles album, especially the second album. I wish he had done more tunes like 'My Man's Gone Now' - revisiting tracks form the old days with a modern flavor. Shirley Horn dug the arrangement so much she used it on her Miles Tribute album. 'Ursula' from Man With The Horn is fantastic as well. Bertrand.
  2. Different stores have different policies, I guess. On Thursday, I got the elusive Saxophone Colossus 20-bit (no brown slipcase, curiously) for $9.99 + tax. 10 minutes later at the same store (18th and L street in D.C.), I got Seven Steps To Heaven (the single CD) for $6.99. I got the discount on both, no problem. On Saturday evening I got the following items in Rockville, MD. Although at first the register did not seem to accept the discount on the multiple items, the clerk forced it through (he said it wasn't so hi-tech that he couldn't bypass it). Some of these (guess which) are for my wife (our anniversary is Thursday - couldn't wait for them to show on yourmusic.com). Paul Simon: Surprise for $13.99 Prince: 3121 for $11.99 Belle And Sebastian: The Life Pursuit for $13.99 (limited edition with DVD) Ike Quebec: It Might As Well Be Spring for $6.99 Donald Byrd: Royal Flush for $6.99 Spiderman 2007 calendar (25% off) I really also wanted to get the Ornette Golden Circles, but then I remembered my backlog. I hope there's another $5 off coupon in 2 months or so. I got lucky, I guess. Plus I've got like $12 on my rewards card - enough for a free CD in November. CDs are 'electronics'? What BS. Bertrand.

  5. The Borders' in Rockville, MD had 'em. Picked up Quebec and Byrd for $6.99 each with that great $5 off coupon. Who needs yourmusic in that case Tower cannot be getting them, right, or are the majors shipping to them again? Bertrand.

  7. Claude, Thanks for the information - good to see I'm not the only one who this affects. I was worried someone would tell me it's something I could fix in iTunes itself, and then I would have to confess my technical ignorance. It took me long enough to figure out how to get rid of that &%$*&^% crossfade thing. Bertrand.
  8. Guy, Good to know it's not just my copy. Since you seem to understand what I'm talking about (I'm sure future posts will tell me just enjoy the music and shut up) and use iTunes, I'm curious: are there any other CDs that have this problem? I've loaded hundreds of other CDs, and the only other one with this problem was the iTunes-only version of George Russell's Jazz In The Space Age (possibly the original CD as well, I don't have it). And there it's only the first two tracks. On Saxophone, it's every track. One option is to join all the tunes and make Colossus one long 40-minute medley Bertrand.

  10. Thanks to this forum I was able to: 1) Know to look for a copy of the 20-bit before it's extinct. 2) Find it at Borders' and get it for $10 with a coupon. It sounds great. Now here's a very weird thing I noticed: I imported it into iTunes, and I noticed that the separation between tracks is not quite right. About 1/2 a second from each tune is in the previous tune. This is only noticeable when you put it into iTunes. On my CD player, you don't hear it because one tracks goes to the next without transition (and when you look at the timings, you can't really see if it's happening because there's a few 'negative seconds' between the tunes). You hear it on iTunes because there's a slight pause between tracks. It's possible that the software is slightly off, but it's never done this to me before. Anyone else notice this? Bertrand.
  11. If you google, there are a few sites that actually have the entire text of the magazine stories. Some sites were yanked by his representatives, so you better act fast. I printed them all and will put them in a binder. Years ago, I read these in a 2-volume unauthorized collection which they had in the rare book room at Cornell University. I remember 'Hapworth' as being unreadable. He is still living and pushing ninety. He has not published anything new in over 40 years. He has not authorized any film version of his work (Elia Kazan wanted to do Catcher). 'My Foolish Heart' is the only exception (based loosely on 'Uncle Wiggily In Connecticut) and that experience soured him. Bertrand.
  12. I made a few calls today, and so far no one has it. Concord seems to have yanked it (it's still on their site, whatever that means), as opposed to just letting it slowly disappear. This new twist is interesting, though. The tape degradation did not just recently surface - it's been there for a while. So, for those of you who have the 20-bit, do you notice any sort of splicing occuring at the the mentioned (around 2:19-2:25 on 'Moritat')? Maybe I'll just live with the RVG. Which means I'm in no hurry to get it. Bertrand.

  19. Yeah, I knew that - they were loose with the title as well as the personnel listing. It was in a conversation with Dixon that I first got the inkling that Larry was the organist. He said something like: 'Someone needs to talk to [big] John - I think it sounds like Larry Young'. Note that he did not say: 'I remember this date very well - it was Larry Young, not John Patton'. Bill Heid remembered that it was recorded in Pittsburgh (hence the title). He was categoric that it was Patton, not Young. And Heid knows his organists! Go figure... Bertrand.
  20. Mike Fitzgerald also had some problems with the intro to 'Work Song'. He thought a bar or two were missing, but I don't think so. It's definitely screwed up the way he does it, but I counted and the meter seems right. He just plays the head 'funny' the first time around. Sort of like he does with 'Oleo'. I could be wrong, but I think it's complete. Dig the way Patton/Young gets into the 'Love Supreme' vamp on 'Old Man Moses'. Bertrand.
  21. Although Miles was a jerk in his autobiography in what he said about him, I read an interview with Jordan in which he was saying some really vile stuff. Turned me off to say the least. Bertrand.
  22. Up - based on the thread about 2 LPs on one CD. If they are thinking of doing 4, 5 and 6 (which seems likely, since the 20-bit is going OOP), they should do the following: 1) Add 'Au Privave' from the Mobley Prestige to 4, 5 and 6 - it goes with 'Confirmation' 2) Reissue the Mobley two-fer, with 'Au Privave' left out instead of 'Alternating Current' Alternatively, they could issue the 2 Mobleys as two separate RVGs. Anyone have connections with Concord? We need to tell them about this ASAP before they mess it up the way Fantasy did. Bertrand.
  23. I never went as deep as figuring out the playing time, but with the never-before-issued tracks, it was definitely more than one CD. The thing that drove me nuts with the old Fantasy was the way they put together the two Mobley Prestige dates. To fit them on one CD, they left out 'Alternating Current'. What they should have done is leave out 'Au Privave' and add it to 4, 5 and 6 as a bonus cut. Therefore, the two tracks with McLean (the other is 'Confirmation') would have been together, and all the other Mobley cuts would be present. A person buying 4, 5 and 6 and the Mobley two-fer would have all the material. Since the 4,5 and 6 20-bit is going OOP, is an RVG in the works? We could still call them and suggest it if they also intend to reissue the Mobley. It may not be too late. Bertrand.
  24. This up and down thing is too weird. While I was waiting for my order, Worktime and Curson disappeared and reappeared. I'm not sure what the deal is there. No new titles have appeared, I assume? Bertrand.
