  1. A friend of mine went to the Grachan show - she said it was fabulous. Bertrand.
  2. I can confirm that the record with all those guests is in the works. I had the same apprehensive feeling about some of those guests... Bertrand.
  3. Jeff, Welcome back! Bertrand.
  4. When was Brian May with the Yardbirds? Bertrand.
  5. All Steeplechases are $13.99, which is more reasonable than any other site I know. Is this their everyday price? Thanks, Bertrand.
  6. They are the exclusive property of Frank Driggs - can't you read Seriously, one look at his mug and you can tell he's a fraud. Bertrand.
  7. I always get a little bit ticked off when Benny makes his claim that the Messengers were foundering until he came along. This is a gross exaggeration - the McLean/Hardman then Griffin/Hardman uints had some fine moments. Granted, Tough! sucks, but it was probably partially the fault of whoever the A&R man at Cadet was. Also, I only have the Charly version, and the sound is awful. Bertrand.
  8. A few I did not see mentioned yet: Charles Mingus - Jazz Portraits (UA) Old And New Dreams - Playing (ECM) Art Blakey - Meet You At The Jazz Corner Of The World (BN 1960) Woody Shaw - Berlin Jazztage (Muse) Bertrand.
  9. Frank Driggs is in need of a thread of his own. Back to the book sale... Bertrand.
  10. Jim Sangrey has a copy, to listen to whilst reading Larry Kart's book. Bertrand.
  11. I thought the Sonny Rollins/Leonard Cohen match-up worked pretty well. I saw the Santana/Shorter band on this show as well, doing 2 pieces. I have no clue what they were. This band cancelled their D.C. show, and the CD remains unissued (I've been told a CD DVD or both is on the way - I'll believe it when I see it). Anyone have any clue what they played? Bertrand.
  12. Fact of the matter is, used CD store bins are cluttered with W.M. product. They can't give the stuff away. But I'm derailing the thread; I'll drop this topic for good. Bertrand.
  13. Thanks. I wonder how they actually decide this: obviously, they must reach some sort of agreement before they start the set. I'll never understand what it takes to be a working jazz musician; I woul feel completely lost as a sideman in such a situation. Maybe one set in Baltimore will be standards, and one will be 100% improvisation. That would be a nice mix! Bertrand.
  14. I'm going to two sets in Baltimore this Friday. Dumb question: will they play some compositions that I might actually recognize (not that I've memorized The Call yet), or can I expect two sets of complete improvisation. I'll enjoy it either way. What a month for gigs: Mingus Big Band last Wednesday, Venessa Rubin's Dameron tribute last night at the Kennedy Center (with a nonet led by Cecil Bridgewater, new arrangements by Golson, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster and Bridgewater, and Dameron's widow in attendance), Grimes/Allen next week, Roy Haynes Bird tribute on 3/12 and possibly Wallace Roney at Blues Alley the next week-end. Maybe I need to start a 'help donate funds to finance Bertrand's club-hopping' thread. Bertrand.
  15. Bringing this back up again: for Dorham's Jazz Contemporary, anyone have any luck figuring out which of the two sessions (2/11/60 with Butch Warren or 2/12/60 with Jimmy Garrison) that the bonus tracks (especially 'Sign Off') were from? I now have the complete thing on my iPod. I will try to id the bassist on the bonus tracks based on the playing on the master takes, plus my knowledge of Butch's playing. There's got to be an easier way: does anybody have the Japanese version of this session with the bonus tracks? Thanks, Bertrand.
  16. Imagine used CD stores applied the same pricing scheme to Wynton Marsalis CDs. This would cause some dilemma, as I'm not sure how to reprogram cash registers to ring up negative amounts. Bertrand.
  17. Well, there was an article in the Washington Post a few weeks ago that inventoried all the types of mp3 players and files, and it seemed to say that the iPod format was incompatible with other mp3 formats. But I haven't tried it yet, I guess this would be a good test. I know, I know: don't believe anything you read in the Washington Post Bertrand.
  18. Decided to revisit this for some reason (I'm not being vague - there is some reason). JohnJ - thanks for not letting the 1/19/05 posting be a thread-killer! Youmustbe - your comment about Ana Maria Shorter is grotesque and tasteless. Regardless of how you feel about Wayne, Jarrett, Mercer, Wynton Marsalis, and all those poor saps who need to take viagra, it is totally uncalled for. Bertrand.
  19. Think will go through, because Lonnie Smith is NOT wearing a turban on the cover. Bertrand.
  20. Dumb technical question: can I download the X-mas mp3's and put them on my iPod, or is there some incompatibility? Thanks, Bertrand.
  21. Makes sense to me. There was one thread that to me seemed really out of hand, in which certain members not only admitted to having a copy of a never-issued session, but also offered to put together a CD-R of the best of this session to send to a certain producer. I think that really went overboard! I have always strived to be discrete (not that I have anything to hide), but if I ever slipped, I apologize. Bertrand.
  22. Wow - you must have been in a deep sleep to miss the hubbub about the RVG reissue of Basra Check out the feb 15th RVGs thread in the reissues forum, and prepare your self for a whammy. Bertrand.
  23. Charlie Parker was apparently beaten to death by Art Blakey, according to one web site! Bertrand.
  24. Garth, This little gem is currently available in the U.S. as the second half of the Jackie McLean Vertigo Connoisseur (or is it OOP already?). 'The Way I Feel' is by Butch Warren. 'Blues For Jackie' is attributed to Kenny Dorham. Bertrand.
  25. I stole a copy of Money Jungle from them once. I brought it back later for a refund, because it was missing an alternate take. Bertrand.
