  1. I'm surprised no one has responded: 'I'm in there right now, browsing the organissimo forums with my laptop'. Bertrand.
  2. Confession time. For reasons I cannot explain, I completely panic when it comes to trying to start using new technology. I chose my words carefully here: once I get started, I am fine and actually start becoming quite savvy at it. But I just freeze when it comes to getting started. I use computers at work, so it's not like that's the issue. This is the reason it took me forever to start using the web (but now I'm fine with it), this is the reason I am the only person in this forum without an avatar, this is the reason I never post pictures. This is also the reason I have yet to create a website, even though I have a lot of jazz research data I would love to share: I just don't know how to get started. What this is building up to: my wife got me an ipod for our anniversary a month ago, and I have yet to even open the box. I'm just worried that I'll get totally confused and frustrated (also, I have a million other things to deal with right now) and give up on the thing. I know I want to put the entire Jackie McLean discography on this thing, and also download some of those OOP Verve titles they made available through i-tunes. Also, I want to have one version of every Monk tune, just to keep them straight in my mind. So don't be surprised if I start peppering this thread with inane questions - please bear with me, and assume you are dealing with a mentally challenged individual. My first questions (before I even open the box): 1. Once I have some tunes on there, how do I play them back in my car? 2. How do I move the songs from my PC to the ipod? 3. Can I partition the database of songs I created into 'subdirectories', e.g. one directory for Jackie with a subdirectory for each album, and other directory for Monk? Thanks in advance, Bertrand.
  3. I think I know who the high bidder is I'm glad you saw this thread, Mike. Although I didn't have your book here at work, I didn't remember this acetate being mentioned. And of course I remember 'Dancing The Gigi' from the copyright folios. What I'm wondering is how many rare acetates like this are floating around for Gigi or other artists? Who gets a hold of these? How about 'test' pressings (such as the one for Back To The Tracks mentioned in the Brooks Mosaic box booklet)? Where did the Lee Morgan 'River Jordan' lead sheet come from? Is this something IJS can bid on, or do they have no budget for such things? I wonder if this is something the Library of Congress could try to acquire. I would hate to find out it fell in the hands of someone who had no interest in sharing it with researchers. Bertrand.
  4. Remember that picture of the golfer babe that got b3-er in trouble? I'm happy enough with the argument that a lot of these pictures were copyrighted, and their presence here could really screw things up. There are some musician pictures that are also copyrighted that are still up. Try posting a Far Side cartoon and see what happens... B3-er had warned that the thread was on the hit list, so I say good call. Bertrand.
  5. Does anyone have the Gryce bio handy? Is this acetate mentioned in there? Bertrand.
  6. I put my e-mail in the box to get the newsletter. The street date is December 6th. I wonder if these will come out in the U.S. as well? If not, I've got to make up a little shopping list for my mother in Paris Bertrand.
  7. It's finally official??? I met a guy from Universal France in Paris back in January at a Wayne concert, and he told me about this reissue series. He asked me to hold off on mentioning it until it was officially announced, and that he would send me an e-mail. Of course, I never got the e-mail. Anyway, I know the Alan Shorter America title is one of the ones coming out and I'm all over that one. Don't know the other titles. Bertrand.
  8. Oh, also, Andrew Hill solo piano on Friday 11/12 at An Die Musik in Baltimore (two shows 8 and 10, $20 each). Three of us are already going. Thought I'd post this as a heads up - seating is limited (80 or so). Bertrand.
  9. I don't know if the coupon is online, but the blurb on the hardcopy seems to imply that you need an original. I was able to fish out two more coupons from the recycling bin at work, so I have 3 so far. I may get two more tomorrow. The coupon is for a free cover (vs. $5). There is no official minimum, but I think they assume that those sitting at tables from which you can actually see the band are spending a bit of money on food or drink. I plan to eat dinner there, but I'm sure you can just get an appetizer or a glass of wine or something. Caveat: the food is pricey; the cheapest thing is a salad for $10-$11, but most dishes are $16-$18. I think the musicians are paid out of this food surcharge, however. I hope some of you can join me on 10/1; it should be fun. I'll try to get more coupons. I'll up this thread as we get closer to the date. Bertrand.
  10. Apparently, Roger Ebert stars in a couple of his movies, and even co-wrote one! Bertrand.
  11. Mundell Lowe will be at the Smithsonian's Imax Jazz Friday 10/1 6-10 PM. There's a coupon for free cover on page E9 of the business section of today's Washington Post. Anyone interested? Also lots of good concerts at the Kennedy Center coming up in the new year. Bertrand.
  12. I loved her first album. The duet track with Wayne, and the duet with Herbie are gorgeous. Bertrand.
  13. I've never even seen a picture of Gummo. Bertrand.
  14. Wayne Shorter has paintings out there, but it doesn't look like his style at all. Bertrand.
  15. Tina Brooks recorded this tune just 9 days after Wayne. What are the odds of that? Bertrand.
  16. 'Rejoyce' is (in my opinion) the best song she ever wrote; I also like 'Hey Frederick' and 'Eskimo Blue Day' a lot, but the former is mostly a jam session (the last 5 minutes or so), and the latter is co-written with Kantner, whose songwriting skills are truly all over the map. Bertrand.
  17. What else is coming out today? Bertrand.
  18. Warhol also did another Burell album (volume 2?), and Johnny Griffin's The Congregation. I think he was an unknown, struggling artist at the time. Bertrand.
  19. Oh, forgot the political thing. General Richard Myers was there (chairman of the joint chiefs of staff and erstwhile jazz fan). He started his speech with safe patriotic generalities (including a long quote from a WWII soldier), but then foolishly started mentioning Afghanistan and Iraq. He was loudly booed (someone even shouted 'war is not the answer'), and apparently went real pale. Did he really not think he would get this kind of reaction? This administration is just clueless. It's too bad we're going to get four more years, because Kerry is running a dreadful campaign. Bertrand.
  20. I just got back from the competition, where I was volunteering. A couple of comments: 1. Herbie only alternated with George Duke only during the second half all-star portion of the program (one was on acoustic piano, the other electric depending on the piece). Only George backed the competitors. 2. Quincy Jones was also a judge. 3. Sadly, Clark Terry was not well enough to perform (he had a bad cough). He made it all the way to the backstage area, but was feeling just too ill to stay and went back to his hotel. I hope for a speedy recovery. 4. Wayne was fantastic on the three cuts he played on: - 'Dindi' with Flora Purim (he quoted a phrase from his solo on 'Mademoiselle Mabry') - 'Freddie Freeloader' (the Jon Hendricks version) with Blanchard, Jarreau and Elling; despite the presence of these two vocalists whom I have never cottoned to, Wayne and Terrence really pulled it off - the finale ('In Walked Bud', again with Hendricks' lyrics); here, all four finalists took turns singing the lyrics, and it was REALLY GOOD (you know how I feel about most vocalists). That's all for now. Bertrand.
  21. Does anyone know if these will be copy protected? This is something I fear every time a new batch of Blue Notes is announced. I hesitate to pre-order as a result. Thanks, Bertrand.
