NEW CD now available for pre-oder
bertrand replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Dang, I was about to sign up tonight. Does the $30 option give the new XMas downloads? -
Oh. How is that one?
-
I believe this is the only studio album since THRAK and the only one I do not have. Is it worth picking up? Thanks, Bertrand.

My Library has a thing called Freegal. Downloaded tons, but I doubt this will be on it.

Just saw that this can be purchased on iTunes. It looks like it is out-takes from the Black Star sessions. Is this on CD, or should I go the download route? 1201 music has a complex process but I don't want to send them money in advance since it is 99% sure there is no CD. Has anyone gotten this yet? Thanks, Bertrand.

Album Covers That Make You Say "Uhhhh...."

Crusaders never had a singing midget, so these guys have a slight edge. -
How is this legal? Did Concord just dump the tapes? Maybe someone stole them?
-
Is there anyone who is buying the Andrew Hill box who would then have a Verona Rag to sell? It is the only one I am missing. Looking for the real version, of course, not the bullshit CD-R version. Thanks! Bertrand.

Where would the original tape for that KD CD be located? Bertrand.

He is also a HUGE Rodney Dangerfield fan!!!

Tom plays in DC but not as much as I would want. He is outstanding. In May, he was a sideman on the Miles Davis 90th birthday concert under the leadership of bassist Herman Burney that took place as part of the Smithsonian concert series that I help organize called Take 5. His solo on Blue in Green was amazing. Bertrand.

Do Wayne and Larry get much solo space on this?

I am still trying to understand this concept of use of name. Frank Zappa was a composer, he would be the first to tell you that. So a concert stating that the works of Frank Zappa, composer will be performed should be fine as long as ASCAP/BMI fees are paid. What am I missing? If the family will keep thinking of him as a 'brand' rather than a composer, then he can never be included in the pantheon of composers, something we know he wished for. Now there was that Puccini estate vs. Bob Belden - was the issue there that they did not like the arrangements? What legal ground did they have to justify the album being pulled? Bertrand.

Who did you miss when they were alive
bertrand replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
This is the first time I have seen an explanation given for Mobley's absence at the Canadian gig. A few days later, Lee recruited Wayne. I wonder what the Messengers quartet sounded like. Was that recorded? Bertrand. -
Can you call the concert 'The Music of Frank Zappa'? What if the concert is happening at a nonprofit such as the Smithsonian?
-
Let's pretend some cats want to get together and play some Zappa tunes on a gig. As long as the venue pays its ASCAP/BMI dues, what legal right does the Zappa Estate have to prevent this gig from happening? I never understood this. What am I missing? Dweezil's point makes sense to me: To keep Zappa's music alive, get it played. Sue Mingus got that, even if she was difficult about other things. Bertrand.

Gene Ammons Prestige Sessions Needing Collating on CD
bertrand replied to JSngry's topic in Discography
I think there was a daughter. I believe Don Sickler has rights to some of the Ammons stuff. Bertrand. -
Last time I bust my balls nominating someone.

Most of the quartet's concerts are being officially recorded. Why Blue Note does not issue these regularly, if only as downloads, is a mystery. It is almost impossible now to identify the components of the medleys. They always bring books of music to the stage but it is not clear how much they use. This would be a great topic for a doctoral dissertation. Lots of work there. Bertrand.

Concord enters the 5 LPs box market
bertrand replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
An Emily Remler Concord box would be a very good idea. She needs to be rediscovered. As for the Fantasy material, there aren't too many artists for which that would not result in duplication for me, but there are some who have 4-5 titles under that umbrella and boxing them would make a lot of sense, but not commercially: Don Friedman (5), Walt Dickerson (4), Larry Young (4 with the unissued session) etc. It would be nice if they packaged the 3 missing Bobby Timmons records together... Bertrand.
